What is IACS?
• IACS or International Association of
Classification Societies is technically a
maritime organization which was founded on
September 11, 1968 and which comprises of
all the classification societies.
• There are total 12 members in IACS and they
are the largest maritime classification societies
in the world.

How to Become Member of IACS?
There are several classification societies working all
over the world but minimum requirements to
become a full member of IACS are:
1. Minimum 30 years of experience.
2. More then 1500 sea going vessels registered.
3. All vessels must be over 100 GT with total 8 million GT.
4. Should have 150 exclusive surveyors and 100 technical
staff.

• Shipping Order (S/O) or Shipping Instruction : It is also called Booking Note,
is the source of all cargo documents.
Once Ship’s agent accept this SI then he and cargo owner has been bound
on an agreement for shipment.
• W/R : Issued by Warehouse (Tank Form) as a proof of cargo received in the
Warehouse or tank.
• Manifest : The list of cargo loaded o/b. There are 2 kinds:
‐ Cargo Manifest
‐ Freight Manifest
• Outturn Report : The list of Cargo Discharged at a particular destination
port, plus its description of condition.
• Damaged Cargo List : The list of damaged cargo.
• Short & Over‐Loaded Cargo : The list of Cargo Shortlanded or Over‐
Loaded (Over‐Discharged)
• Cargo Tracer : Document used to trace the shortlanded cargo which is
suspected over carried to other port or shortloaded at the loading port.
• Non Delivery Report : Report mentioning the cargo is not found at the
destination port.
• Statement of Facts : Reporting Daily Activities Cargo loading / discharge
activities, plus weather condition, stoppage, etc.
• Daily Report : Daily report of cargo loading / discharge each day.
• Tally Sheet : Daily Report of Tallying from particular hatch on particular
day. Any damage will be noted on “remarks” column.
• Time Sheet : Reporting the time for every activity each day, including all
important events or happening which affecting the work progress.
• Stowage Plan : Layout drawing showing the location of the cargo o/b the
vessel for easier loading/discharge.
• Cargo Hatch List : List of Cargo Loaded/Stowed in the particular
hatch/hold.
