3. Operating Principle
The hydraulic pressure controls ram opening/closing and the well pressure acts on the ram so as to

strengthen and maintain the sealing performance.

3.1 Principle of U Type BOP Hydraulic Control System
When high pressure oil of hydraulic system is pumped into the closing cavity of left and right cylinder, it
pushes the main piston and ram assembly to move to the center along the ram's cavity to realize well sealing.
When it is pumped into the opening cavity of left and right cylinder, it pushes the main piston and ram
assembly to move away from the center to open the wellhead. The conversion valve of hydraulic pressure
system controls the ram switch; It can complete ram open or close operation the in 3~5 seconds.
When changing the ram, Close the ram pressure and open the cylinder head. Remove bolts from cylinder
head, and push the ram moving towards the well center meanwhile push cylinder assembly to move away from
the shell. The moving direction of ram is opposite to the cylinder assembly, when the cylinder assembly moves
to fully extended position, the ram is clear of the body, so the ram can be taken out from the shell. Install
eyebolts on the top of ram, and lift the ram out of BOP. Close cylinder assembly by opening the ram pressure.
Push the cylinder assembly to fully close position. An important feature of Ram BOP: before cylinder assembly
move to shell, the ram will be pulled back to open status by high pressure oil. Because of this feature, when
7
User Manual of U-type Ram BOP

cylinder assembly is close, the ram will not interfere with drilling strings in the hole. Figure5.

3.2 Principle of Sealing
There are 4 main seals working in ram BOP to seal the wellhead effectively: seal between ram top seal and
body seal; seal between ram front seal, tubular and body; seal between body and intermediate flange; seal
between piston's front shaft and intermediate flange. Process of ram sealing divided into 2 steps.
First, affected by hydraulic oil, front ram packers compress and seal the front part of BOP body by the pushing
of ram shaft, and seal the top part of BOP body by the excessive compression between top seal packer and
body, which form primary sealing; second, when there is pressure on wellhead, it will further compress the
front ram packer from rear of the ram, meanwhile the wellhead pressure push the ram from the bottom to make
the ram close tightly to top seal surface of BOP body, which form reliable sealing. This is well pressure
assisting sealing.
operation.
Main pressure-containing such as body and intermediate flange are cast with high strength and high
toughness alloy steel.Hazardous chemical component and non-metal debris in material are strictly
controlled. It is forged by refining furnace and processed by appropriate heat treatment to ensure safety of
BOP. The ram's cavity in body is circular long-course shape to reduce stress concentration. The opening and
closing of intermediate flange and ram are driven by hydraulic pressure with the same oil route. The opening of
intermediate flange and closing of ram is the same oil route and operation; the closing of intermediate flange
and opening of ram is the same oil route and operation.

Shear ram is composed of upper ram body, lower ram body, top seal, right seal, left seal and tool
face seal. Tool face seal is placed in the front slot of the upper ram body, with right seal and left seal
on both sides. The shear ram is installed in the BOP in the same manner as the common ram.
But need to replace the hanger(I) of the main piston to hunger (II),Otherwise it will not be used.
▲!Note: The top seal of shear ram is different from that of common ram. This can be known
clearly from the corner boundaries of top seal and front seal (or side seal) during installation. The top
seal of the common ram will interfere with the side seal of shear ram at the boundaries, while the top seal
of the shear ram cannot interfere with the front seal of common ram.
Operating Parameters of Shear Ram Assembly:
When the ram is equipped with boosting hydraulic cylinder and the hydraulic control closing pressure is not
less than 10.5MPa, it can shear 5″G-105 drill pipe with wall thickness of 9.19mm . When the hydraulic control
closing pressure is not more than 21MPa, the ram can shear 5″S-135 drill pipe with wall thickness of 9.19mm.
The maximum operating pressure sealed is 70MPa.

▲!Note: Common shear ram is not H2S resistant and should be used cautiously in H2S environment.

4.3 Front Shaft of Main Ram Seal Structure

4.4 Secondary Seal Structure
The seal between intermediate flange and main piston front shaft can be divided to two parts, one is to seal
well pressure, the other is to seal hydraulic pressure, and secondary seal structure is between this two parts.
Commonly, the seal in this part is very reliable, multiple structure seal rings. But sometimes because of lack of
maintenance or other reasons, seal ring will be worn out, which may result in leakage when sealing the well.
So some actions will be taken by using secondary seal structure.
When the well is sealing, if there is leakage from observing hole, the seal ring must be worn out. You can judge the
worn-out seal ring is for sealing well pressure or sealing hydraulic oil pressure from the character of liquid. Then, open the
Z1" hexagon head plug in top grease hole immediately, remove the bolt clockwise by spanner, and inject bar-shaped
secondary sealing grease into annulus by check valve, to enhance the sealing.

Caution of Using Secondary Seal System:

To prevent the occurrence of curing failure of secondary sealing grease as a result of BOP is left unused for a long
time, no secondary seal grease will be injected into BOP when it leaves factory. It is also not recommended that secondary
seal grease will be injected into BOP whenever BOP will be left
unused for a long time. Inject secondary seal grease into BOP just before use, and take grease out whenever the
maintenance of BOP, and clean out the grease.
Prepare the specific tools in advance.
When BOP is working, frequently check the observing hole (Z1/2″ hexagon socket plug socket head)
at the lower of BOP to find out whether there is any well liquid flowing out or not.
Inject secondary seal grease with appropriate quantity until there is no leakage at observing hole because big friction
resistance of secondary seal grease and lots of debris adhered on grease will damage ram shaft when the ram is open.

4.6 Ram Manual-lock Structure

Manual-lock system of Ram BOP consists of locking screw, housing of locking screw, main piston and manual-control
assembly. Manual-lock system closes and locks the ram by the manual wheel. When you need to seal well for a long time, it can
lock rams in closing poison after close ram with hydraulic. Turn the hand wheel to right, drive the locking screw rotating through
operating rod, because the locking screw locate in the housing of locking screw, rotating locking screw to make the shaft against
the caudal of main ram, then the main ram move toward the center of well head and lock the ram assembly. Manual-lock system
only can close the rams but can't open it. If you want to open rams that closed by manual system, you must unlock the system to

original position and then open the rams with hydraulic pressure. It's the only method to open rams, operation procedure as
following: Turn the wheel hand to the left until end, then turn back 1/8~1/4 circle to avoid the block of locking screw when the
temperature changes. Open the rams with hydraulic pressure.

4.7 Sealing Mechanism of Spacer Flange

A Type: The sealing between the spacer flange and the shell of Ram BOP is of axial static sealing
pressure self-sealing structure, illustrated as below.

Figure 13 Diagram and Installation of A Type Spacer Flange (Side-door seal ring)

Complete sealing belt is established on the surface between lip seal rings and the waist-shaped surface inside
shell chamber. Initial sealing is established through the magnitude of interference of compression on the inner
lips and external lips of lip seal rings, with O-ring included. When subject to well pressure, the inner lips and
external lips are pushed closely against the waist-shaped surface of shell chamber to establish reliable sealing.
Therefore, for this kind of structure, the sealing between the spacer flange and the shell does not need large bolt
pretightening force.

Note: Lip seal rings are directional and should be installed according to the above figure, that is, the
direction of the lips should be opposite to well pressure.

B Type: The sealing between the spacer flange and the shell of Ram BOP is of floating sealing structure,
illustrated as below.

Figure 14 Diagram and Installation of B Type Spacer Flange (Side-door seal ring)

Floating seal: The pressure from bottom hole pushes the floating seal frame against closely to the shell. So the
side-door bolt tightening torque is 20%~30% less than the common side-door sealing, ensuring reliable sealing
during operation. Consequently, the labor intensity to open the side door is also greatly reduced.

5.RamBop—install,operation and maintenance

5.1 Preparation before Operation
After ram BOP is installed on wellhead, the item as following should be checked before operation. It can be operated after

testing running with no problem.

 Check whether BOP is right installed or not: Hanging ears is on the top of body. Manual-lock system should be installed
completely and fixed, and put a card on the hand wheel to note the closing circles. Every connecting bolt should be screwed
evenly.

 Check whether the connection of oil line are consistent with the sign on BOP or not. Each ram should be checked twice with

2~3MPa by control panel for removing the air in the oil. Adjust the connection line if open and close of BOP are not
consistent with the handle in control panel.
 Check whether the manual-lock system is right connected or not, whether manual shaft ram closing is flexible or not. Noting
the number of closing circle when well is closed, put a card on the hand wheel to note it. When the test is over, revolving
left the hand wheel to unlock, and open the ram by hydraulic pressure.
 Pressure test whole wellhead system, test standard is consistent with relevant well control regulations. After pressure test,

screw on all connecting bolts evenly. The closing moment of flange bolts are shown in Table 18 or Table 19.
 Check whether ram rubber size is consistent with the drilling tool used in the well or not.
 Check whether the manifold of releasing, killing and choking are right connected or not.
 When test BOP on ground, fill BOP of water, open and close the ram once to remove the air in ram cavity.

5.2 Operation and Caution

 Assign the operator who is familiar with working principle, performance, process, operation, maintenance,
repair of BOP to operate the BOP.
 When there is no pipe in the well and testing the pipe ram, the maximal control pressure should not exceed
3MPa, or it will damage packer. When there is pipe in the well, blind ram isprohibited to close.
 When shut the well for long time, lock ram with manual locking system. Signs should be marked on the
control platform to prevent misoperation.
 After drilling to objective formation, open and close the ram once a day to check weather it is flexible or
not and weather manual locking system is work or not. Do on-off experiment of the blind ram after lifting
drill tool. When there is pipe in the well, blind ram is prohibited to close.
 Bleed off pressure by opening the ram is prohibited, which will damage packer. Check whether the
manual-lock system is kept in unlocking position whenever opening the BOP ram. Check whether the ram
remains full open (full return back to the body) to prevent ram from damaging by drilling tool.
 Keep oil clean.
 After use of BOP, keep BOP ram full open for inspection and repair.

6. Maintenance
Clean and inspect BOP after serving each well. Replace any damaged parts. Coat ram cavity with rustproof oil. Coat
connecting bolts with grease.

6.1 Replacement of ram and ram sealing packer:

Ram sealing packer is one of the key part of BOP. Once ram sealing packer get damaged,BOP will fail to
seal the well. It is very important to keep packer in good shape and replace it in time if there is damage in
sealing surface.Procedures of ram packer replacement are as following:
Note and make sure the manual locking equipment is in unlocked.
 Open the ram completely with hydraulic oil.
 Loosen bolts of cylinder lid. Note: Not to remove bolts of cylinder lid if there exists pressure in the well.
 Open the middle flange with the pressure less than 10.5MPa. Close ram and open the middle flange (side
door) to limit position.
 To avoid middle flange (side door) close, it is necessary to put two same wood blocks between
intermediate flange and body or dismantle control pipes.
 Pull out ram assembly from ram shaft tail. When taking out ram assembly, you should pay attention to
protect switch of piston pole from bumping and scratching.
 Replace ram rubber, pry out top seal then unload face seal forward to replace new packer. Procedure
for assembling is in the opposite order.

6.2 Replace piston

Replace piston front rod seal, piston seal, piston tail rod seal, switch piston seal of ram if any damages on them.
Specific procedure is as following:
 Close the ram with hydraulic pressure to open intermediate flange with the pressure less than 10.5MPa and

take out ram assembly;
 Bleed off the pressure of inside cylinder. Put a clean oil basin under cylinder so that hydraulic oil will
not spill down to ground when dismantling;
 Unscrew intermediate flange bolt between the intermediate flange and hydraulic cylinder.Through small
gap on the cylinder to prize up to separate intermediate flange and cylinder with a prize bar. Then
suspending cylinder with suspend tool and dismantle cylinder;
 Dismantle ram replacing cylinder from big cylinder and take out piston tail rod seal ring and O ring;
 Pull out main piston;
 Lift intermediate flange with suspend tool,unscrew;
 Unload back-up ring, take out main piston front rod seal ring, washer, then take out strength
seal ring, tighten seal ring and O ring.

Checking parts after unload are as following:o

 Inside surface of cylinder, inner wall of ram replace cylinder: Ram replacement will produce shallow
vertical scar, linear scars or dot scar on inside surface of cylinder. Fine sandpaper can be used to repair.
If the scar is very deep, even if the replacement of new seal ring still can't prevent oil leaking, inner
surface of cylinder should be repaired by mechanical machining method. Meanwhile check piston and
correlative parts and identify the cause of scar to solve the problem.
 ram on-off piston surface: If there is scar on ram on-off piston surface, the method of judgment and
handling is just as cylinder. If coating is stripped down, replace new part or repair the damaged part, or it
will leak heavily.
 Main Piston: Replace piston if the depth of asymmetric worn on piston activity seal surface exceed 0.2mm.
No obvious scars which affect seal should be found on other surfaces. If coating is stripped down,
replace new part or repair the damaged part, or it will leak heavily.
 Seal ring: Inspect lip of seal whether it has wear situation. And whether O seal ring has extrude cut.
When the seal part damaged or has scar, it should be replaced.

6.3 Installation of cylinder assembly

Installation steps are opposite to dismantle steps. But pay attention to following items:
 Check whether there are burrs and sharp edges on parts. If any, get rid of them to prevent seal ring from
scratching and keep parts clean.
 When enclosed seal ring, smear lubricate-oil on its surface and other relevant seal surface. Notice the
direction of lip seal ring, hatch of lip should face the side which has pressure.
 Hatch of lip seal ring in piston face to the direction of hydraulic pressure power.
 Note: seal ring can pass through guide direction part in shaft head without scratch.

6.4 Replacement between intermediate flange and body seal ring

When seal rubber or framework in the seal ring of intermediate flange is damaged, seal ring of side door should
be dismantled. Specific procedures are following as:
 Open intermediate flange with hydraulic pressure.
 In order to avoid intermediate flange being closed. It is necessary to put two same wood blocks between
intermediate flange and body or dismantle control pipes.
 Pry out seal ring with a tool.
 Replace seal parts. For shaft static seal structure , lip direction of seal ring face to eye well and being

smeared with lubrication when being installed.

6.5 Dismantlement of ram on-off piston

When seal rings between ram on-off piston and body, intermediate flange, ram replace cylinder are
damaged, else or intermediate flange need to be repaired, we need dismantle down ram on-off piston. Ram
on-off piston and body is connected through screw. There is a wrench above it. Procedures of dismantlement
and installment are as following:
 Dismantle big hydraulic cylinder part, only intermediate flange and ram on-off piston left.
 Push intermediate flange to near the part of body so that it won't affect wrench.
 Lift intermediate flange with crane to reduce the press between intermediate flange and ram on-off piston
rod to least.
 Contrarotate ram on-off piston rod and unscrew it out. Notice: if it is in trouble in rotate, you shouldn't
dismantle it forcely prevent damaging matched surface between ram on-off piston rod and body. After
adjust the suspending intermediate flange, then dismantle it.
 Installment is like above method. Coat lubricants on matched surface and screwed. Inspect whether seal
rings in every part are in order before install ram on-off piston.

6.6Daily Maintenance
Please check the jamming situation of the shell cavity when have to operate the ram assembly over working
pressure of 3.5MPa (5000psi)
Please operate and test the BOP according to API RP53 standard once a week.
Warning: Please DO NOT close the pipe ram assembly or variable ram assembly when there isn’t any drill
string in the well so as to avoid damaging the ram rubber.
6.7 Operating Maintenance
Please dismantle the BOP once a year or half a year in cold regions.
Clean all the parts, DON’T use metal brush to clear the seal position.
Replace all the sealing rubbers, gaskets, and O rings.
Decide whether to change it according to the actual situation of ram rubber in ram assembly.
Maintain or replace the damaged metal parts.
Wash the piston rod when dismantle the BOP, measure the degree of curvature of the hook position, which
should be small than 1mm, and carry on Ultrasonic Test. (if degree of curvature over 1mm, should consider
replace it )
7 .The storage of rubber
All rubber spare parts should be stored reasonably as following:
 Rubber should be stored inside a dark and dry room with temperature between 0 and 25ºC, Not store
rubber close to heating equipment and avoid direct sunlight
 Keep the corrosive material away from the rubber.
 Rubber should be far away from high voltage equipments which may produce ozone.
 Rubber should be placed in a free status and can't be wrested, crushed and hung.
 Check the rubber frequently to find out whether there is any damage, crack, or bend on the rubber. General
conditions of the storage period of 2 years.
