Question 1 (20 marks)

Consider the converter as depicted in Figure 1. The converter operates in the following mode: each
switching period Ts contains two subintervals numbered 1 and 2. In the schematic illustrated in Figure 1,
the switches are connected to terminal 1 during subinterval 1 for time DTs and to terminal 2 during
subinterval 2 for time (1-D)Ts. The proportion D of the switching period Ts is defined as the duty cycle.
The source Vg has a positive constant value. Assume that all elements are ideal.

(a) Show that the conversion ratio of this converter is given by . (4 marks)

(b) What is the voltage output range for a constant voltage input while the duty cycle varies? (1 mark)

(c) Show how a sinusoidal voltage output of the form can be obtained by appropriate
selection of the duty cycle. What ranges of voltage output magnitudes and frequencies can be obtained by
this converter? (3 marks)

(d) Sketch the capacitor voltage and inductor current waveforms for a constant value of the duty cycle D
greater than 0.5. (2 marks)

(e) Develop the steady-state equivalent circuit model. (2 marks)

(f) The Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) switches are realized by BJTs and diodes in Figure 2. Explain the
selection and placement of those semiconductor devices. (2 marks)

(g) Considering the circuit of Figure 2, under what condition, the converter will operate in a Discontinuous
Conduction Mode (DCM)? Sketch the waveform of the inductor in DCM. (3 marks)

(h) Derive the converter's conversion ratio when operating in DCM. (3 marks)
