Course Outcomes:
1. Concepts of Fourier theory and transforms can be adopted to problem solving
2. Periodic and non-periodic functions are modelled and evaluated using Fourier analysis and
transforms
3. Engg. Problems are modelled and effective solutions are obtained analytical and numerically
4. Concepts of linear algebra are adopted for problem solving, and defining engg. Problems
5. Effective solutions are obtained by using techniques of linear algebra

COURSE CONTENTS
Module-1: Z- transforms (8 hours)
Z- transforms : Definition, Standard Z transforms, Linearity property, Damping Rule, Shifting rule,
multiplication by n, initial and final value theorems, Bivariate Z-transforms, region of convergence, Inverse
by partial fractions method, convolution theorem and inverse by convolution theorem. Solution of
difference equations.
Module-2: Fourier series and Fourier Transforms (8 hours)
Fourier series: Euler’s formulae, Dirichlet’s conditions for Fourier series expansion, Even and odd
function, half range series, harmonic analysis.
Module - 3: Fourier Transforms (8 hours)
Fourier Transforms: Definition, Complex Fourier transforms, Cosine and Sine transforms, Inverse
Fourier transforms, Parseval identity, Discrete and Fast Fourier transforms,Solution of differential
equations

Module-4: Linear Algebra-1 (8 hours)


Vector spaces- definition, examples, Linear combinations, sub spaces, linear dependence, basis and
dimension, linear mapping, linear operator, Kernel and Image of a Linear mapping, matrix
representation of linear operator, change of basis. Row Space and Column space, Rank and nullity
theorem
Module - 5:Linear Algebra-2 (8 hours)

Inner product space, Orthogonal Sets and Bases, Gram Schmidt Orthogonalization process, Polynomial of
matrices, Characteristic polynomial, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, diagonalization, Characteristic and
minimal polynomial.
