The Fountain

I believe the first Artwork, the fountain (Buddha) by Sherrie Levine, displays a standard

urinal sculpture coated with bronze and represents an ordinary urinal (Modernism in Europe). I

believe the representation shows how the item is essential to human beings. On the other hand,

the Artwork by Duchamp is made of a standard urinal that is not coated nor painted. The left side

of the painting contains the creator's signature, which is engraved in black painting. In that case,

just like the fountain (Buddha), the urinal represents the integral process of human nature. So, the

fountain is a vital masterpiece that delivers the message that the most basic process of a human

being is essential for their health and normal functioning (Kleiner, 2017).

The artwork fountain (Buddha) By Sherrie Levine was created to commemorate the

original work done by Duchamp. The Artwork was made as a critique of the original version art.

The work represented authenticity and also the same message that the work of art was as simple

as it appeared. On the other hand, the fountain by Marcel Duchamp, created in 1917, was the

original work critiqued by Levine. So, the fountain was a protest message by the artist who felt

that art in society was exaggerated and complicated (Kleiner, 2017).

This is a Pipe.

First, the Artwork, This is a pipe by the street artist Banksy displays the concept of a raw

pipe mounted ad protruding on a wall surrounded by a frame. The artist also labels the work of

art, which makes it clear that the illustration is as it appears (Kleiner, 2017).

Secondly, the Artwork entitled, The Treachery of Images by René Magritte, shows a

drawn tobacco pipe under which specific words are written in French; these words translate to,

'This is not a pipe." So, the image contradicts the audience and, at the same time, creates an

entirely different meaning concerning the representation (Kleiner, 2017).

Therefore, Banksy's work is a satirical piece that was recreated due to Magritte's original

work. So, by placing an actual pipe on the wall and labeling it, I believe Banksy was trying to

send a message which directed audiences toward the real pipe which Magritte's work was

referring to. So, the work was a means of protest where the concept in the painting is represented

in actuality (Kleiner, 2017).
