Media Based Arts and Design in the Philippines

II. Content Standards:


The learner demonstrates an understanding of basic concepts of art elements and processes by
synthesizing and applying prior knowledge and skills.

III. Performance Standards:


The learner creates artworks using available media and natural resources on local topics, issues,
and concerns such as environmental advocates, ecotourism and economic and livelihood programs.

Through this Learning Module, you are expected to:

1. identify art elements in the various media-based arts in the Philippines; and
2. enumerate distinct characteristics of media-based arts and design in the Philippines.

In the previous quarter, we talked about computer or digital art, how technological advancements
in the 2oth century have influenced art production, and how we view art. Overall, technology can
be an effective and vibrant tool for empowering us to express our ideas, goals, and advocacies in
creative ways. In this quarter, we will explore emerging trends in media -based arts and design in
the Philippines. This include photography, film, animation, print media, digital media, clothing
technology, interior design, and industrial design.

Photography: “A picture is worth thousand words”. There is a story behind every
photograph, however simple it may appear. Photography is useful for documenting history and
communicating ideas as well as artistic expression. Hand-drawn images are the earliest form of
documentation.
Functions of Photography: In the middle of 19th century photography reached the
country by the European colonizers. Photographs was then used for documentation, tourism
booster, and record anthropological findings and research. It is also used as a symbol of status,
historical documents, communication tools, propaganda materials, and basis of ideas for other art
forms like illustrations, portraitures and engravings. Now photography becomes an instrument of
self-expression. The current generation is often labeled as the “Selfie Generation”.
Photography as art: Photographers possess “the eye” that recognizes light, shadow,
color, detail, highlight, form, shape, and texture. They also effectively use the principles of design
such as balance, emphasis, harmony, rhythm, and unity. With the aid of digital technology,
photographers become more innovative making the seemingly flat and uninteresting image turn
into art.
Film: “Motion Pictures”, is a series of still photographs on film that are projected in rapid
succession onto a screen using light. Film is become popular and influential during the 20 th and
21st century due to its extraordinarily effective medium in presenting drama, particularly in eliciting
emotion.
Philippine Cinema: The first films were shown on January 1, 1987 at the Salon de
Pertierra in Escolta. The first movies shot in the Philippines was filmed by the Spanish soldier
Antonio Ramos and became the first film producer in the country.
Jose Nepomuceno: Father of Philippine Cinema, the first Filipino filmmaker.
1930:Nationalism was the theme of the films in this period.

1940:War and heroism were the themes.
1950:The First Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Improvement of cinema techniques.
1960:Highly commercialized films, soft-porn movies, Western-inspired flicks, and action movies
dominated Philippine cinema.
1970-1980:Experimental and political films. Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.
1990: Romantic comedy, slapstick comedy, sexually titillating films, and slasher flicks.
2000: Independent (Indie) films.
2010: Box office hits and critically acclaimed films.
Function of Films: Films are used as an instruments to relay news, give information, sell
product or service, record history and important events. They are also used as historical documents,
communication tools, and propaganda movements. Films are also used for entertainment of the
masses, and tool for mass education, mass instruction and educative value.
Film as art: Film is a complex art for it involves other arts and requires a myriad of
technical skills. It is also a collaborative art and the captain is the director.
Cinematography: “Writing in Movements” is the most important aspect of filmmaking -
there is no cinema without a camera.
General Aspects:
1. Camera Angles: high, low, bird’s-eye, straight-on
2. Camera Distances: extreme long shot, long shot, medium, close-up, extreme close-
up
3. Camera Movement: hand held, dollying/tracking, pan, tilt, crane, helicopter.

Mise-en-scene: “Placing on stage” - the arrangement of everything that can be seen


before the camera including the actor, props, set design, lighting, location, costume, and make -
up.
Editing: “key to cinema” The cutting and connecting different shots or pieces of film.
Sound: A powerful aspect, as it actively influences how viewers perceive and make sense
of the image. Diegetic sound include voice of characters, music played in the cafe, sound of honking
cars, and sounds that originates within the film’s world. Nondiegetic sound include the
commentaries of the narrator and film scores.
