Philippine
Media-
Based Art

Lesson Discussion
Philippine Photography in the 21st Century
Digital photography is an amazing addition to the world of many Filipino
photographers today. In their new digital world, Photographers capture their memorable
moments easier and faster, and share, print, correct, and even alter images. They have a
new means to express themselves, to explore colors and light, and to change the way to
change the way they produce and look at images. They have more photos of themselves,
their families, friends, events, and whatever moments they choose to capture.
The following are some of the famous Filipino photographers and their representative
works in the field:
Self-expression – National Geographic
Photo Contest Winner George Tapan’s
“Into the Green Zone” has been able
to capture the nostalgia that the
photographer wants to portray using
the green color of the sea water that
contrasts the dark color of the sky.
1. Documentation – a picture is a
proof of the value we give to
our lives. It can capture our
favourite memory or document our traditions. It helps us capture special moments
that if not documented on time could be lost forever.
2. Communication – a picture is said to be worth a thousand words. It can speak to,
or elicit an emotion from its viewers. Like sounds, words, and symbols, we can
communicate what we think and feel through a picture. Today, digital
photography’s higher image resolutions help photographers to communicate the
message or meaning in their pictures.

Advertising Photography (Food)

Food advertisement is one way of using
photography as a means of communication, where the
photographer highlights the savoury characteristics of
the food, its preparation, packaging and the means of
serving. Large fast-food companies take advantage of
this type of photography to sell many food products to
consumers like you and me. The photographer is careful to
give the food enough light, not too much, to prevent it from
melting, sagging, or wilting.
A. Fashion Photography
A fashion photographer takes photographs of models
aimed at showcasing clothes or other types of accessories. In
this kind of photography, it is not always necessary that the
model looks directly at the camera. Oftentimes, the image is
stronger if the model looks in another direction. The typical
duties of a fashion photographer can include actually taking
pictures, overseeing a photo shoot, editing, and selecting
pictures, and then promoting and marketing the work to a
print or broadcasting agency.
B. Travel Photography
Travel photography is an exciting way to live life.
By travelling, the photographer brings back a collection of
images showing places, people, and cultures he/she could
not hope to see otherwise.
C. Photojournalism
Photojournalism is the process of
storytelling using the medium of
photography as your main story telling
device. While a journalist will use their pen
and paper to tell stories, a photojournalist
will use their camera to capture the visual
representation of a story.

Activity 2. Self-Check
Directions: Answer the following questions concisely. Write your answers on the space

convey through his photo?

During the year 1999, the Philippines became one of the fourth largest film producer
in the world, but the number dwindled poorly to 86 in 2001, and lower since. However,

Filipinos are once again gaining worldwide recognition through film.

1. Teen-Oriented Romantic Comedies
2. Action & Action Comedies
3. Melodrama

international recognition, directed by Brillante Mendoza, Laurice Guillen, Maryo delos

The Technology-based Art of Animation in the Philippine

Philippine animation was initially started as comics that was popular during the
1920s and 1950s. Larry Alcala, a well-known komiks artist, made the first Filipino
animated cartoon in 1953. It was a short black-and-white exercise in movement on regular
8mm film of a girl playing jump rope and a boy playing with a yoyo.
Other Filipino animations after Larry Alcala:
• Panday (1986) by Gerry Garcia
• Adarna (1997) by Gerry Garcia
• Urduja (2008) by Gerry Garcia
Did you know? ...
The Simpsons, Lilo and Stitch, Tarzan, The Lion King, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and The
Princess and the Frog are drawn and animated by Filipinos. Jess Española helped created
the Simpsons characters, while Ruben Aquino drew some characters for the Disney
animated movies mentioned earlier.

Innovations in Product and Industrial

Design
Difference between Product design and Industrial Design
It can be product design all on its own. However, industrial design generally applies
only to industrial products so, while a fashion designer or software developer uses product
design to develop their concepts, and industrial designer only when the final product is
meant to build or produce something of its own.
Filipino Product and Industrial Designers
1. Kenneth Cobonpue – He is a Cebu-based
industrial designer. He is known locally &
internationally for his use of natural fibers and
materials such as rattan, buri, abaca, and
bamboo. He is known and recognized by interior

design firms, furniture stores and dealers, and even famous Hollywood celebrities
like Tom Cruise and Oprah.

fashion world as the Wrap Artist of the
Philippines and is recognized for her

inabel, from Ilocos Sur and piñalino or
pineapple fibers with Irish linen for clothes
and accessories.

3. Aze Ong’s art consists of Filipino-inspired

crochets turned into clothes, handbags,
hand-made jewelry, and other decorative
and functional objects.

fashion designers. Laurel developed his

earned experience and extensive training

for his designs and entrepreneurial skills. He is also credited to have given birth to
other designers’ lines and has truly revolutionized social enterprise in the Philippine
fashion industry.

Photography (20 points)

Directions: For this task, you only need a smartphone or a DSLR camera. Pretend you are
either a Food Photographer, a Fashion Photographer, a Travel Photographer or a
Photojournalist and take 1 or 2 photos based on their specialization.
For Food Photographers – Take a picture of any food or drink, be it a street food, your
mom’s cooking, or a fast food you bought. Make sure that the picture is attractive and
catches the viewer’s attention by following the different angle you learned in the 2 nd
Quarter.
For Fashion Photographers – In this task you might need a model. Have your model wear
appropriate clothing that suits his/her body type and have him/her pose for you. Choose
the appropriate setting and follow safety protocols if you will shoot outside your
barangay. Use the different angles you learned in the 2nd Quarter to add your desired
vibe to your shot.
For Travel Photographers – For this task, take a picture from a scenic location. Older
pictures you have taken yourself will do, but remember to include the date when you
took the picture. Going to a far location to take pictures is discouraged to prevent you
from being exposed to the corona virus. Make sure that the pictures are your original
shots and not ripped from the Internet.
For Photojournalist – Look for some interesting things or events that happen in your
barangay or neighbourhood. If you think there is nothing interesting happening in your
neighbourhood, look for some day to day activities your family or neighbors do and take
some pictures as if it’s for a documentary. Use angles you learned in the 2 nd Quarter to
add a desirable effect to your shots.
