Introduction

This European Standard is intended to act as a complementary standard for existing European Standards
covering other components used in personal fall protection systems.

The scope and the requirements are based on the philosophy that a guided type fall arrester including a rigid
anchor line is rated to sustain the maximum dynamic load generated in a fall from a height by the mass of
one person, including any equipment carried. This European Standard provides requirements and test
methods for guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line used in personal fall protection systems in
accordance with EN 363.

1 Scope

This European Standard specifies the requirements, test methods, marking, information supplied by the
manufacturer and packaging for guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line. This anchor line is
usually attached to or integrated in ladders or rungs adequately fixed to suitable structures. Guided type fall
arresters including a rigid anchor line conforming to this European Standard are components of one of the
fall arrest systems covered by EN 363.

This European Standard applies to rigid anchor lines which are intended to be installed vertically and/or with
a combination of forward-leaning angle and/or sideways leaning angle between the true vertical and the
vertical +15° (see Figure 2).

Multi-user applications, i.e. rigid anchor lines that allow more than one user to be attached at any one time,
are not addressed in this document.

Annex A
(informative)

Explanatory information on this edition of the standard EN 353-1:2014

This annex provides explanatory information on the key points covered in this edition of the standard and is
intended to provide the reader with background information on the principles used, which form the basis of
this standard.

Table A.1 — Informative explanation of the key points arising from the revision of this standard

Sub-clause Rationale
Clause 1 Scope To be consistent with EN ISO 14122 standard and
ISO standards concerning allowed inclination for
ladders the standard covers the angle range of
+15°/0°.
3.3 Rigid anchor line A rigid anchor line is now defined as a rail or
tensioned wire rope fixed at both extremities. A
minimum tension for an anchor line made of wire
rope has been included in the installation information
in 7.2.
3.5 Locking distance Locking distance HLD for the guided type fall arrester
has been introduced for the function tests and set at

http://qstandard.org/
3.9 Stop device
0,5 m.
Stop devices have been introduced to prevent
unintentional detachment of the guide type fall
arrester.
4.2.1 Energy dissipating element pre-loading Pre-loading of the energy dissipating element has
been introduced to check that it does not deploy
prematurely under loads that can be expected in
normal service.
4.2.2 Guided fall arrest and rigid anchor line The static strength requirement of 15 kN is based on
(static strength requirements) a maximum arrest load of 6kN multiplied by a safety
factor of 2,5 with the guided type fall arrester tested
4.2.2.1
at different positions on the rigid anchor line (e.g. at
4.2.2.2 a joint, above the top bracket).
The purpose of this requirement is to test non-
metallic elements remaining permanently installed
on the rigid anchor line to a higher value to cover
possible degradation in service. This requirement
excludes non-metallic elements, (e.g. energy
dissipating element), on a guided type fall arrester
which are stored separately and away from the rigid
anchor line.
4.2.2.3 This requirement was added where the load at the
top of the rigid anchor line made of wire rope
exceeds 6 kN and to maintain the same factor of
safety.

41
BS EN 353-1:2014
EN 353-1:2014 (E)

4.2.2.4 The purpose of this requirement is to check that the

guided type fall arresters does not become detached
from the rigid anchor line with a lateral movement by
the user in a sideways direction.
4.2.3.1 Stop type A The load of 2 kN relates to a single user of 100 kg in
suspension with a factor of safety.
4.2.3.2 Stop type B The load of 12 kN relates to a single user of 100 kg
falling with a factor of safety.
There is no dynamic strength test on stop type B, as
it is considered that the 12 kN static strength test for
stop type B is sufficient.
4.3.2 Performance test In general terms the human physique can be
4.3.3 Function tests classified by type, size and composition and can be
defined as endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph,
4.3.3.1 Cold condition
which under dynamic conditions can generate
4.3.3.2 Minimum distance different results.
4.3.3.3 Fall back For consistency and reproducibility of testing,
4.3.3.4 On a guiding bracket performance tests are conducted with a rigid steel
4.3.3.5 Sideways fall mass of 100 kg representing a single user.
4.3.3.6 Sideways leaning anchor line The objective of the performance tests is to confirm
the arrest of a fall is made is in line with the test
requirements i.e. arrest load and distance.
The objective of the function tests is to confirm
correct operation of the guided type fall arrester
locking feature(s) under foreseeable conditions of

http://qstandard.org/
use using minimum and/or maximum rated loads.
The purpose of this test is to check the locking
function of the guided type fall arrester at a low
temperature (i.e. a temperature not warmer than
−30°C). This test is carried out using a 100 kg rigid
steel test mass.
The purpose of this test is to check the locking
function of the guided type fall arrester when a user
is positioned close to the rigid anchor line and in
contact with the guided type fall arrester.
The potential for a fall backwards has been
addressed in the fall back function test. A load is
applied to the guided type fall arrester in an
unlocked condition to represent a typical backwards
load that could be expected in service.
This test has been introduced to check the locking
function of the guided type fall arrester and the
integrity of a guiding bracket on a rigid anchor line
made of wire rope in the event of a fall occurring
with the guided type fall arrester positioned directly
on the guiding bracket.
The potential for loading the guided type fall arrester
in a sideways direction has been addressed in this
function test. The sideways test is conducted using
the maximum rated load only as this will apply
higher stresses on the guided type fall arrester and
rigid anchor line.
This test covers a sideways leaning anchor line with
an angle up to 15° from the vertical and was
included to cover foreseeable conditions of use.

Significant technical changes between this European Standard and the

previous edition EN 353-1:2002

Table B.1 — Significant technical changes

Clause/paragraph/table/figure Change
Introduction This standard is based on the philosophy that a
guided type fall arrester including a rigid anchor line
is rated to sustain the maximum dynamic load
generated in a fall from a height by the mass of one
person, including any equipment carried. This
European Standard provides requirements and test
methods for guided type fall arresters, including a
rigid anchor line, used in personal fall protection
systems in accordance with EN 363.
Clause 1 Scope This European Standard applies to rigid anchor lines
which are intended to be installed vertically and/or
with a combination of forward-leaning angle and/or
sideways leaning angle between the true vertical and
the vertical +15°.

http://qstandard.org/
Clause 2 Normative references Updated. Reference to EN 361, EN 10264–2,
EN 13411–5 and EN ISO 9227 added. References
