4.2 Safety principle

4.2.1 General
The safety principles set out in EN 1 2929-1 apply.

4.2.2 Hazard scenarios

In addition the following events may lead to hazardous situations, which may be avoided or limited by the
requirements of this document:
a) inefficient rope protection during storage may lead to corrosion which may lead to rope failure within an
inspection period;
b) the package on reels may lead to hazardous situations if by a failure of the support the reel can start rolling;
c) the failure of the rope connection with an auxiliary rope or with the brake controlled reel as well as the turn out
from the installation support may lead to the release of the elastic potential energy of the pulled rope during the
installation process.

5 Safety requirements and measures

5.1 Packaging, storage, handling and transportation
5.1 .1 General
Any special requirements for packaging, marking, lifting devices, storage conditions and transportation shall be
agreed by all involved parties.
NOTE Due notice should be taken of any recognised lifting standards where they exist.

5.1 .2 Storage
Adequate protection and support shall be provided to the rope taking into account storage location and duration.
Rope and package shall be subject to periodic inspection during storage.
NOTE Under prolonged periods of storage it may be necessary, depending on storage conditions or state of rope, to
provide additional protection, e.g. in the form of a suitable rope dressing, or improvements to storage conditions.

5.1 .3 Handling
The package shall be lifted or handled by means of suitably fitted and designed accessories and equipment.

5.1 .4 Transportation
The package shall be firmly secured during transportation such that no damage shall occur to the rope and its
package.
7
EN 1 2927-5:2004 (E)

5.2 Installation, tensioning, connecting and/or splicing

5.2.1 General
The installer shall provide the purchaser with details of the procedure he intends to adopt.
NOTE The intended procedure should be submitted by the purchaser to the rope manufacturer and the cableway designer
for comments.
Suitable arrangements shall be made by the installer to ensure safe access and safe working places and safe
working conditions for the purposes of rope installation, connecting and/or splicing and tensioning.
Appropriate means shall be provided for safe access to zones (such as line support towers, elevated machinery
and tension pits) where the risk of fall exists.
Installation and tensioning shall be done according to assembly instructions see EN 1 2929-1 .
5.2.2 Installation
The installation procedure shall include all necessary manpower, equipment and communication system
requirements to eliminate the hazards and minimise the risks in any normal and adverse condition. It shall also
state all necessary measurements to be made during installation or specified in EN 1 2930.
When components or equipments of the cableway, e.g. rope supports or anchor points for rope tensioning are to
be used, the cableway designer shall verify that it is capable of withstanding the load to which it will be subjected
during the whole or a part of the installation.
Appropriate precautions shall be taken to prevent the rope from rotating, forming loops or being damaged when
hauling the rope during installation.
In the case of an unexpected interruption before completion, adequate equipment shall be made available to
secure the rope to withstand any adverse weather conditions e.g. wind, ice, snow.
Rope installation shall be carried out by competent persons and under the direction of one nominated person.
During installation phases at site, communication between the crews and the manager shall be efficient and
reliable; in case of loss of communication and control the operation shall be suspended at the next safe step until
communication is again operational.
5.2.3 Splicing and connecting
Long splicing shall be carried out in accordance with EN 1 2927-3.
End fixing shall be in accordance with EN 1 2927-4.

5.3 Measurements, adjustments, tests and records

During installation, note shall be taken of:
 meteorological conditions (temperature, lightnings, wind, ice, snow, etc.) at the site;
 external loads applied to the rope;
 any controlled or accidental rotation of the rope;
 the geometry of supported parts of the rope and the sag of the spans;
 any damage, such as broken wires, to the rope.
The installed ropes shall be adjusted in accordance with the instructions of the cableway designer.
On completion of the installation a record shall be made of rope diameter, lay length, both in the main body of the
rope and in the splice and additionally for ropes over 36 mm diameter, waviness, in order to facilitate monitoring in
service.
Where applicable, a record shall also be made of temperature, tension applied and position of the tension device.
