Student’s name:

Lab Experiment

Introduction: (What do you expect to learn? What is the purpose of this lab?)

How the time period of a simple pendulum is related to its frequency of swinging.

Hypothesis: (Predict the outcome(s) of the experiment, must be in an “if…, then…” format)

If the time period of the swinging of a simple is increased, then the frequency of the vibration is decreased.

Materials: (What equipment and materials did you need for this lab assignment? List the name and the amount)

1. 50cm stand
2. 40cm string
3. A Bob
4. A 100cm ruler
5. A stop watch
6. A protractor
7. A set-square

Procedure/ method: (What steps did you take to accomplish this lab assignment?)

1. Setup the stand in a vertical position using the set-square

2. Tie the Bob to the string
3. Fix the string to the end of the stand
4. Adjust the length of the string, using the ruler, to 40cm (measure from the upper knot to the centre of the bob)
5. Displace the pendulum slightly to one side to an angle of 10-15 degrees
6. Start the stopwatch at the same time when you release the bob.
7. Record the time for about 10 complete (back and forth) cycles
8. Divide the time recorded by the number of cycles to get T for 1 cycle
9. Divide the number of the cycles by the total time to get the frequency "f"
10. Reduce the length of the string in steps of 5cm and repeate steps 5 to 9
11. Tabulated the results for the average time of 1 period T corresponding frequency f
12. Graph the relation between T on the X axis and f on the Y axis

Results: (Record the data obtained using tables, charts, graphs, sketches, etc)
Analysis: (Explain your data in words)

The graph of f vs T is a curve shows inverse relation between f and T, such that the product of f*T for any given point = 1

Discussion: (Discuss what happened in the lab. Give details on anything that went wrong. Answer any questions from
the lab question sheet)

Conclusion: (What did you learn? What conclusions can you draw from the results of this lab assignment? Compare the
results of the experiment with your hypothesis)

Results show that the frequency of motion of a simple pendulum and its time period are inversely proportional to each
other.

In fact they are the reciprocal of each other.

T=1/f
