challenged the muscles of healthcare systems and leaved immense pressure on emergency (EMS)
and emergency departments (EMS) (Leiker & Wise, 2020). This case study aims to examine the
challenges and solutions that have arisen in emergency medicine in response to the covid 19
pandemic.
personnel face in providing care for patients while maintaining their safety (Leiker & Wise,
2020). These obstacles include a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), trouble
prioritizing patients, adjustments to how care is provided, and worries about the danger of
transmission. To meet these difficulties, healthcare organizations had to immediately put new
rules and procedures into place to protect patients and healthcare personnel (Leiker & Wise,
2020).
One of the main key solutions proposed to figure out the PPE shortage of PPEs is the
implementation of alternative PPEs like gowns, face shields, and goggles (Leiker & Wise, 2020).
In addition, many EDs have implemented measures to ensure that PPEs are used appropriately
and to minimize waste to address triaging patients; EDs have implemented screening processes
and separate areas for COVID-19-positive patients to minimize the risk of transmission (Leiker
& Wise, 2020). The delivery of care has also changed, emphasizing telemedicine and remote
monitoring.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the significance of emergency medicine
readiness and the requirement for healthcare systems to adapt quickly to changing circumstances
(Leiker & Wise, 2020). In addition to outlining the measures put into practice to solve the

The authors conclude that emergency medicine providers must be prepared for the
challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and must be proactive in developing strategies to
address these challenges. They recommend that emergency medicine providers take advantage of
the available resources, including telemedicine and triage protocols, to provide the best possible
The shortage of PPE and increased infection control measures have presented
