Subject: Retelling a story: Are You My Planet?

Common Core Standard(s):

RL.1.3. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Objective(s):
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to retell a story using key details from
the text.

Resources/Materials List:
● Are You My Planet book by Lori Haskins Houran
● Retelling a story worksheet

Procedure:
● Gather class on the carpet
● As a class we will read the book Are You My Planet
● Ask students what happened in the book. Did Beep find his home? What did he
do when he was lost? Very quick recap of the book?
● Students will go back to their seats and we will look at the retelling a story
worksheet
● The front of the worksheet will be done as a class and students will follow
along/cops answers to those boxes
● For character sections have them name the character and explain them. Is it
green? Is it a person?
● For setting ask them what planets they remember Beep visiting. Were they big?
Small? Colors?
● Do other sections (beginning, middle, end) have students raise their hands and
● *Re-write answers on the board
● The back side will be done independently using the details from the front side of
the sheet
● Set a 20 minute timer for students to complete the back - add time if you feel
students may need it
○ Timer video

Plans for differentiation:

● Answers will be written on the board for a student to copy down so that visual
learners do not struggle when they are told what to copy down
● Timer will be set for the back sid eof the page so that students know how much
time they have left to work and are not upset by the time ending and they are not
done.

Assessment:
I know that students met the objective when they can retell the story that we read using
the words that are in teh word bank on the bottom of the back page. These words
include the main characters, the setting, problem, and solution.

Plans for accommodation/modification:

● One modification may include doing the back side of the page in a small group
at the back table witha teacher. Students struggle to put all of the boxes together
and therefore it will be easier when they have someone to guide their thoughts
and writing.
● For students who have a hard time remembering details they can listen to the
read-aloud version of the book again.
