SECTION A – 22 marks

Instructions: Read the following scenario and answer ALL the questions which follow.

Innocent until proven guilty?

1. Maas John sipped his rum and quietly watched the news report on the small television that was
mounted high above the rows of liquor in B&B’s bar and grill. “Another day and another political
scandal,” he thought. In disgust, Maas John turned his attention from the screen and drowned the last
of the rum in a single gulp.
“You better just turn off that TV and pass me another whites Babsy,” he half shouted trying to be
heard over the din that was characteristic of the bar. “Too much bad news, either murder or thieving
politician. I am tired of all this corruption. Every day you wake up is another scandal,” Maas John
added, this time speaking to no one in particular.
2. “Leave the tv alone,” came a response from the other end of the rum bar counter. “You should get
used to this by now. Them politician just tell us all sorts of Anancy stories to get power so that they
can fatten themselves. I not going to send up my blood pressure over them.”
“Well that is you. I can’t get use to thief, Limey,” Maas John replied, his tone decidedly chilly. “I am
one Jamaican who will never get used to it. You see that Minister Bradley, the man should not be in
our parliament looking so comfortable with all them allegations. He should resign long time, and if
him refuse to resign, the government need to do what is necessary and get rid of him.”
“Maas John, you not serious?” Teacher Brown chimed in. “You really expect the man to just resign
over allegations? Investigations are ongoing, isn’t that what you just hear on the news.”
“I serious like a heart attack Brown. It is not like is just one allegation against the man. Is about six.
Bradley need to resign immediately. Tell me, what the Prime Minister waiting on? Public pressure
turn up, and the man still there. Even the opposition, up in arms, but them is another set, thief no like
see thief with long bag.” Maas John finished dismissively with a loud hiss teeth.
3. “True talk,” Limey responded nodding in agreement. “You don’t need more than one allegation to be
kicked out of your job. Just the least little thing and that is it for some people. Minister Bradley need
to go.”

1
“It look like the rum turning you into an idiot Limey,” Teacher Brown replied. “You think is so this
thing go? You clearly don’t remember the case with the manager from Jamaica Building Corporation
who the Board of Directors fired after allegations that she was thiefin from clients. The company had
to pay out all that them never have after she sue them. They could have saved a lot of money if they
bothered to wait on the results of the investigations. Plus, the man’s reputation and career at stake
here. Due process must be followed. You ever hear of innocent until proven guilty?”

“Who you calling idiot, Brown?” Limey stuttered, “You think because you go to university you know
more that all a we? Man go away from me. What I want to know is what secret them dirty politicians
have for you.”
4. “Limey, calm yourself no man. You well know them politicians don’t have any secret for Teach. I
swear is the rum talking and not you. “So Elder Myrie, how come you so quiet?” Maas John had now
turned his attention to the Deacon from the local Pentecostal church. “I know that you are not really
supposed to be in this place, you know among the heathen but since you here already, what your Bible
say about a thiefing politician like Minister Bradley?”
Elder Myrie smiled to himself. He knew it would have been only a matter of time before either John
or Limey called him out. “Well, I agree with Teach. All we are hearing against the Minister are mere
allegations; don’t think that is enough for him to resign just yet. Let us exercise some patience and see
what the investigations show.”

“All right Elder,” Maas John answered, “Didn’t expect anything else coming from you-answer like a
real Christian, very forgiving. But since I don’t have any claim to godliness, I still think a man with
any form of allegations against him should resign even on principle, and that is what Bradley should
do to at least make we believe him have some decency, but you just can’t expect that from them
dishonest and deceitful politicians.”
5. “Hee, hee, Johnny you have time listening to Elder,” Limey joined in. “Them and the politicians are
the same thing, same way them lie to people, telling them about heaven and all sorts of things so they
can collect offering to build big house. Give me a politician over a pastor any day.”
“Come on John,” Elder Myrie, replied, ignoring Limey who was killing himself with laugh. “They are
all not the same; you have some who work hard in their constituency and genuinely care for people.”

“Well them politicians you talk about must be few and far between because to me all them want is to
get access to taxpayer money so them can thief it. If is me alone them have to resign just at the whiff
of corruption. A bet you would see more of them at least trying to be honest. But I guess that can’t
happen with people like you and Teach around, the due process set”
6. “John,” Teacher Brown replied quietly, “I feel just as strongly as you about corruption in government,
because as a taxpayer I suffer just like everyone else, but rules and procedures must be followed. The
good thing is these politicians are going to find it harder to engage in corrupt activities because the
people are not so easily fooled any more, just give it time.”
“Okay, Okay I hear the two of you,” Maas John was non-committal. “I really hope is so it going to
go or all a we corner dark. But enough about them. Babsy, pass me another whites, because it seem
the only thing I can still depend on in this country is J, Wray an him Nephew.”
