VILLAGES

What are villages like?

Villages are rural areas with a small population of fewer than 10,000 people.

The main characteristics of villages are:

The buildings are low, usually with

only one or two floors. One family
lives in each house.

In many villages today, there are housing

estates, with groups of houses that look
very similar.
Most people know each other because the
population is small.

The streets are short and narrow and they

usually lead to the main square in the centre
of the village. The most important buildings,
for example, the village hall or the church,
are in the main square.

There are farms and farmland just outside

the village. If the village is on the coast,
there is sometimes a small harbour for
fishing boats.
Types of Villages
There are different types of villages in different landscapes:

Villages around a square.

The streets go from the square and the houses
are grouped together. These villages are usually
on plains.

Villages along a road.

They have a straight main road. The houses are
built along it. These villages are usually on
plains.

Villages made up of isolated houses.

The houses are separate from each other.
These villages are usually in mountain
landscapes.

Life in Villages

Life in villages is usually quiet and there is not

much traffic. There are not many schools or
shops.
Most people live in houses. Many people in
villages work in farming. Many young people
leave their village to find work in towns and
cities.
