Concept 1.2
Ecosystem:
Community that contains living organisms and non-living things
that interact with each other.
Hawks: get energy from food.
Hawks eat different types of animals such as
snakes, mice, fish and birds but do not eat
plants.

Sun is the primary source of energy.

Living organisms can be classified according to their way of

feeding to producer, consumer and decomposer.

1.Producer: organisms that can make their own food.

Example : plants.
2.Consumer: organisms that eat other living organisms to get
their energy.
a. Primary consumer: they are animals that eat producer.
b. Secondary consumer: they are animals that eat primary
consumer.
c. Tertiary consumer: they are animals that eat secondary
consumer.

3.Decomposer: organisms that carry out the process of
decomposition by breaking down or decaying dead organisms.
Example:
Worms and millipedes.
Worms and millipedes eat dead matter and produce waste
which is rich in nutrients that increase the soil fertility.

Food chain and food web:

Food chain: model that shows Food web: model that shows
how energy passes from one several interconnected food
organism to another in an chains among living organisms.
ecosystem.

3
Prey and predator:
Prey: hunted (eaten) by other animal.
Predator: hunt other animals.
