INSTRUCTION FOR PRESENTATION (20%)

Week 5 (Online Presentation)

This presentation is directed to strengthen students’ knowledge in the fundamentals of organic


chemistry. In a group of 3, select one (1) of the plant/fruit/vegetable listed below for group
presentation.

1. Aloe Vera
2. Labisia pumila
3. Moringa oleifera
4. Petroselinum crispum
5. Daucus carota
6. Brassica oleracea
7. Plantago ovata
8. Camellia sinensis
9. Plukenetia volubilis
10. Zingiber officinale
11. Citrus hystrix
12. Eurycoma longifolia
13. Thymus vulgaris
14. Phaleria macrocarpa
15. Solanum torvum

DETAILS FOR PRESENTATION

• Identify five (5) active compounds present in the plant chosen.


• Draw the structure of the five (5) identified active compounds.
• Label and list all the functional groups and homolog series in each structure.
• Locate the chiral carbon (if any) from the active compounds of the plant chosen.
• List the uses/benefits of the plant/compound.
• The presentation will consist of a 10-minute oral presentation accompanied by a PowerPoint
(8-10 slides).

CONTENTS FOR WRITTEN REPORT (MAX 10 PAGES)

1. Introduction.
✓ Background of the plant/fruit/vegetable chosen (Scientific name, Family, Genus etc.)

2. Benefit/ Uses.
✓ Briefly explain the benefit of those plant/fruit/vegetable chosen (traditional/medical uses)
with recent reference.

3. Chemical/ Active Compounds.


✓ Draw the structure of the five (5) identified chemical compounds in the chosen
plant/fruit/vegetable.
✓ Identify all the functional groups & homolog series present in the organic compounds.
✓ Identify the total of chiral carbon presence

4. References.
✓ APA style
✓ Minimum fifteen (15) references
✓ References used must be current (< 5 years).

*Please avoid similar structures of compounds with similar functional groups present.
*Written report must be submitted softcopy. Format Microsoft Word.
