QUESTION

1
Write extensively on the following types of packaging paper

i. Kraft paper

ii. Sulphite paper

iii. Grease proof paper

iv. Vegetable parchment paper

v. Tissue paper

vi. Wet strength paper

vii. Coated paper

i. Kraft Paper: This is a strong wrapping paper made from pulp

processed with a sulphur solution. It is a strong brown cun-

bleached paper having at least 80% of virgin wood pulp.

ii. Sulphite Paper: This is a paper of choice for many writers, who

prefer to turn into their manuscript on high quality brilliant

sheet. Sulphite paper is created from sulphite pulp. Wood pulp

is treated with the use of peroxide or hydrochloride and ran

through an operation that yields a thick paper that has lost the

natural hue of the wood pulp and began to take on lighter shape.

Common uses of sulphite paper are with the development

of photographs.

iii. Grease Proof Paper: This is any paper that is resistant to

penetration by grease and oils.

2
Grease proof paper is paper that is impermeable to oil or

grease used in cooking. It is the paper that has been water

proofed by treatment with wax or paraffin.

iv. Vegetable Parchment Paper: This is a unique paper totally

national with unique grease and heat resistance as well as

release properties. It is common used for food wrapping, baking,

decorative laminates, tube covers and other specialist.

Vegetable parchment paper is a paper made by passing a

waterleaf sheet through a bath of sulphuric acid or [ at times ]

zinc chloride, under established condition of time, temperature

and the like. The treated paper is then wash thoroughly so as to

remove the acid or zinc salt, after which it is dried. The chemical

partially dissolves or gelatinizes the paper which is then

regenerated when the chemical is diluted by the washing. This

forms a very tough, stiff, smooth paper with an appearance

somewhat like that of a genuine parchment. Because paper

treated in this manner has a tendency to become brittle and to

wrinkle upon drying, it is frequently treated with a plasticizing

agent usually glycerine or glucose.

v. Wet Strength Paper: It is a paper increased water resistance

due to processing and interlocking of fibres as well as

impregnation with small amount of resins

(e.g. malamine or urea formaldehyde).

Wet strength paper resins are polymer added to the wet

end of the paper making process in order to bind together pulp

fibre such as that tear strength and wear/abrasion resistance

are retained if the finished paper is wetted.

Typical applications include paper towels, paper plate and

cups, map and fine writing papers.

vi. Tissue Paper: Tissue paper is a soft paper product (toilet

paper) used to maintain personal hygiene after human

defecation or urination. However it can be used for some

purposes such as blowing one’s nose when one has a cold or

absorbing common spills around the house, although paper

towels are used for this particular purpose. It differs in

composition some what from facial tissue most modern

(American) toilet paper is designed to decompose in septic tanks

whereas other bathroom and facial tissues are not.

4
vii. Coated Paper: This is a paper which has been coated by a

compound to impact certain qualities to the paper, including

weight, surface gloss, smoothness or reduced ink absorbency.

Calcium carbonate is used to coat paper for high quality printing

used in packaging industry and in magazine. The chalk or china

clay is bound to the paper with synthetic viscofiers such as

styrene butadiene latexes and natural organic binders such as

starch. The coating formulating may also contain chemical

additives as dispersants, resins to give water resistance and wet

strength to the paper, or to protect against ultraviolet radiation.

Other type of coating includes:

i. Polyethylene or polyolefin extrusion coating.

ii. Silicone and wax coating to make release liners.

iii. Paper cups and photography paper.
