LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to

- understand & explain different ways businesses can grow

LEARNING MATERIALS

Google slides/ video/ article or ads

LESSON INDUCTION ( 5_MINUTES)

Recall why a business would want to grow

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING ( 15_ MINUTES)

Explain that businesses can expand in two main ways:

-By internal growth, for example, a restaurant owner could open other restaurants in other towns – this
growth is often paid for by profits from the existing business. This type of growth is often quite slow but
easier to manage than external growth.
-By external growth, involving a takeover or a merger with another business.

Show three examples of external growth

Horizontal merger
Vertical merger
Conglomerate merger
Discuss the benefits of these external growth examples.

ECONOMICS / LESSON TITLE: TOPIC 7: DEMAND

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to

- to define demand.
- draw a demand curve

LEARNING MATERIALS

Google slides/ youtube

LESSON INDUCTION ( 5_MINUTES)

Suppose you found that the price of your favourite snack had been reduced, would you buy more and, if so,
why?
What happens to the quantity of ice cream people buy in hot weather?
Why do people in poor countries own fewer cars than people in rich countries?
Economists answer these and other questions by examining the influences on demand.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING ( 20_ MINUTES)

Define Demand and that demand and price are inversely related.
Explain how the price determines the Individual and market demand.

Market demand: total demand for a product.

Aggregation: the addition of individual components to arrive at a total amount.

With the help of the demand schedule, draw a demand curve with students' input and explain the behaviour
of demons in response to changing prices. Elaborate further on the Extension in demand and Contraction in
demand.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able

- to distinguish between extensions and contractions in demand and analyse the causes of shifts in the
demand curve.

LEARNING MATERIALS

Google slides/ youtube

LESSON INDUCTION ( 5_MINUTES)

Recall what are the two reasons for the inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING ( 20_ MINUTES)

Explain that price is not the only influence on demand. There are a range of causes for changes in demand –
either more or less of a product being demanded – even if the price is unchanged. These reasons are
sometimes known as the conditions of demand. For example, in a period of hot weather, there is likely to be
an increase in demand for ice cream. The quantities demanded will rise at each and every price. A new
demand schedule can be drawn up to show the higher level of demand.
Exhibit how a new demand curve is formed with the change in conditions of demand. Explain the
phenomenon of
- Increase in demand: a rise in demand at any given price, causing the demand curve to shift to the right.
- decrease in demand: a fall in demand at any given price, causing the demand curve to shift to the left.

Explain the Causes of changes in demand that result in shifts in the demand curve than the movement.

LESSON INDUCTION ( 5_MINUTES)

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING (15_ MINUTES)

Explain to students that businesses have to make many decisions. Most business decisions require managers
to have accurate data about the costs involved. The classification of costs helps in business decision-making.
The main classifications of cost are:
■ fixed costs
■ variable costs
■ total costs
■ average costs.
Fixed costs, variable costs and total costs are usually explained by linking them to the level of a business’s
output.

LEARNING MATERIALS

LESSON INDUCTION (5 _MINUTES)

Review previous knowledge using MCQ.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING ( 15_ MINUTES)

Explain to students that the term ‘scale’ simply means the size of business operations – it is a measure of a
business’s output. As output grows, a business often benefits from reduced average costs due to economies
of scale. Businesses may benefit from different types of economies of scale. Sometimes, a business grows so
large that it loses the benefi ts of economies of scale. Instead, it experiences the opposite – diseconomies of
scale. Diseconomies of scale are all due to the problems faced by management in trying to control a business
that has become too large.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELING/LEARNING (20 _ MINUTES)

Explain to students that the type of factors of production employed is influenced by the type of product
produced, the productivity of the factors and their cost. A firm producing a standardised model of car is likely
to be very capital-intensive, whereas a beauty salon is likely to be labour-intensive. If a firm wants to change
the quantity of resources employed by it, it will find it easier to do this with some factors than others. In the
