Student Centered Instruction for Interactive and Effective Teaching

Learning: Perceptions of Teachers in Bangladesh

Article review

The article discusses the student-centered approach the main aim of which is to put

learners or students at the front, highlighting the significance of choice and democracy in

contemporary education. One of the core ideas this approach entails is the enjoyable learning that

reinforces student’s motivation and self-study. The findings of this study report a favorable

perception of this approach among teachers.

One of the key points of this research is that student-centered instruction promotes a more

respectful and interactive learning environment. Students are not viewed as empty vessels who

are supposed to be directed by the teacher. They are expected to express increased interest,

excitement, and confidence in their own abilities to study. Prioritizing the process of acquiring

knowledge for the sake of learning, rather than putting effort in being motivated solely by

grades. This is the primary goal of education.

The average teacher responses reflect a very positive stance on implementing student-

centered instruction in their classroom. The results emphasize the opportunities to enhance their

deep and meaningful comprehension, and supporting environment to master a foreign language

by making their own choices in activities and diversifying learning experience.

It is important to note that there are also common barriers to the implementation of this

approach. Some of the major ones are students’ lack of independence, overreliance on teacher,

and lack of awareness about this approach. Students are used to the traditional ways of teaching,

so it is rather hard for them to adapt and take a leading role in their own learning. Other noticable
concerns include the lack of teaching competence and the possibility of losing authority and

control over the classroom. The inflexibility of teaching materials that promote student-centered

instruction, limitations and test-centered education system hinder the ubiquitous implementation

of this approach.

To sum up, this approach allows your students to take a leading role in their own

education. They are no longer lead by the hand all the time, but rather they lead you as a teacher

and occasionally ask for advice in some places they struggle. So it would be of a great

importance to implement more student-centered instruction in the classroom to make teaching

and learning more meaningful and enrich it with supportive environment.
