What is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted

disease, previously known as a very
common venous disease, which
especially affects teenagers and
people between 20 and 30 years old.

Gonorrhea is transmitted through

vaginal, anal and oral sex. The bacteria
is found in semen, milk, pre-
ejaculatory fluid and vaginal fluids.
Gonorrhea can infect the penis,
vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, throat
and eyes, although this is rare.
Treatment
Adults with gonorrhea are treated with antibiotics. Because
of new drug-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends
that uncomplicated gonorrhea be treated with the antibiotic
ceftriaxone, given by injection.

After receiving the antibiotic, you could continue to spread

the infection for up to seven days, so it is recommended to
avoid sexual activity during those days.
Causes
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria
Neisseria gonorrhoeae and can be spread by
any type of sexual activity. It can be
contracted by contact with the mouth,
throat, eyes, urethra, vagina, penis or anus.

More than one million cases occur in the

United States each year.
