 How can man live a fulfilled life?

 Just by doing from moment to moment those things they like, enjoy, and demand less effort.

Extrinsic goods
 Extrinsic goods are things such as money, power, status, security, ease and liberty (“freedom
from”).

Characteristic of extrinsic goods:

 They solve problems, but by themselves do not give happiness or fulfilment

 First of all, not all problems can be solved with money and, second, happiness is not only the
absence of problems; ultimately, happiness comes from sharing in intrinsic goods, and as we will
see, none of them can be obtained only with money
 None of them are valuable in themselves; this is true of all of them, but it is especially clear in
relation to goods like security and ease whose whole reality is just the absence of something
(danger or effort).
 In relation to them, we are always in competition with others

Intrinsic goods
 Intrinsic goods are aspects of the well-being of persons

Types of Intrinsic goods

 Knowledge
 Life
 Play
 Aesthetic experience
 Harmony with other people
 Intelligent control of one life
 Religion

Characteristic of Intrinsic goods:

 Intrinsic goods are not really things we get, but aspects of our fulfillment
 Intrinsic goods cannot just be picked up somewhere or bought ready-made
 In relation to intrinsic goods, we are not in competition with each other.

The “formula” of fulfilment and happiness

 “Going for fulfilment” in one’s aspirations and objectives is the first of those principles
 Extrinsic goods are important, but they only make sense as means to get intrinsic goods.
 Not restricting one’s concerns to oneself
 One cannot possibly be a good business manager (achieve fulfilment in that area of one’s life) by
thinking only of one’s own interests, of things like pay, bonus, promotion, reputation and so on
