Explain the philosophy and science of wellness massage

I. Introduction
For therapists, it is necessary to understand the past of every
massage technique provided to clients. History is a way of recognizing what
we do now more efficiently. Clients have increasingly rising perceptions of
what they receive from their therapist in a massage session.

These learning activity sheets will help you determine the history of
Wellness Massage.

After going through these learning activity sheets, you are expected to:
1. explain the history of wellness massage;
2. determine the beliefs of ancient people about massage;
3. appreciate the contributions of ancient people in wellness massage.
IV.Discussions
Wellness massage - it is a business service sold to a customer who pays for
the service himself.

Wellness - the condition of being in good health, especially as an actively


sought objective.

Spa - -a commercial institution that provides health and beauty care by


means of steam baths, fitness equipment and massage facilities.

History and Development of Massage

Massage in Ancient Times


Evidence of Massage:

 Found in the cave paintings of ancient cave dwellers


 Paintings show people massaging each other
 Various atrifacts contain traces of fats and oils mixed with herbs

These suggest that lubricants, possibly for healing, calming or beautifying


purposes, may have been used.

 For personal grooming and rejuvenation


 For sports and fitness
 For health care
 For natural healing

The Chinese practiced massage to treat illnesses and boost general health
as early as 3000BC.

THE CONG FAU OF TAO-TSE-a book containing lists of exercises and


massages used to enhance general well-being and fitness.

The Chinese found that pressure techniques were very effective on specific
points and they developed special techniques called amma.

TSUBO (shiatsu)
– pressure technique used by Japanese on specific points
-blind people were given the chance to have an occupation through massage

AYUR-VEDA (The Art of Life) – sacred book which was written around
1800 BC, describes how shampooing and rubbing were used to reduce
fatigue and promote well-being and cleanliness.

EGYPTIANS AND PERSIANS
- used massage for cosmetic as well as therapeutic effects. They mixed
fats, oils herbs and resins for care of skin and beautifying the body and face.
Pots and jars containing these creams have been found in Egyptian tombs.

MASSAGE IN CLASSICAL GREECE AND ROME (500BC)

Greeks believed in the cultivation of a healthy mind and body (holistic


approach)

TWENTIETH-CENTURY DEVELOPMENTS
Many more therapists were trained
Royal Charters were granted

1966 – explored the possibility of establishing a course in beauty therapy to


include massage
1968 – the first full-time course was offered in colleges for further education

Courses are now validated by the Health and Beauty Training Board and
therapists must meet the criteria of National Council of Vocational
Qualification.
