The measuring tools used in carpentry are as given below.

a) Carpenter’s Folding Ruler b) Steel Ruler c) Measuring tape d) Try square e) Sprit Level

a) Carpenter’s Folding Ruler :- Carpenter’s Folding Ruler is used for measuring and marking purpose. It
is made from box wood. It consist of four parts which are joint together by means of hinges. It has
graduations on both sides in inches. It can be folded and carried in a pocket.

b) Steel ruler :- Steel ruler is used for measuring and marking the dimensions of any work piece such as
length, breadth, thickness. It is made from stainless steel. The chromium plating is done on the scale to
prevent rusting. The rule must be graduated uniformly throughout its length. It has markings in metric (mm)
and in British (inches) on upper and lower edge. Conversion table is provided on the back side of the ruler.

c) Measuring Tape :- It is used for measuring length of straight, curved and angular surfaces due to its
flexible blade. When the tape is not in use, it is coiled in a small compact size case which can be easily
carried in a pocket. It is used by carpenters. It is available in different lengths for example 3 meters, 5
meters, 10 meters etc.

d) Try square :- Try square is used for checking levels and 90º. It is used for marking and measuring a
piece of wood. It consist of blade and stock which are joint together by means of rivet exactly at 90º. The
blade is made from High Carbon Steel and the stock is made from cast Iron. The try square is classified
according to the length of the blade. It is available in 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm.

e) Spirit Level :- Spirit Level is used for checking levels of the work piece with reference to ground level. It
