CMCM4040: Turning Points

Dr. Myrleene Grace Yap

29-Sep
1. Worship Leaders should not be the only worship leaders
They must be true lovers of God. Not somebody who makes the changes in the
Worship style. There are a lot of people who made the changes but they are not
Loving God honestly.

2. The first turning point happened in Creation Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning, God
created the heavens and the earth. When God created Morning stars, They sang
together. The music is created in Heavens.
The book of Job 38:7 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels
shouted for joy. Everything was created through him and all were made by God for
his own use and glory. Because he wants to declare his glory.
It doesn't say, they don't have a Conductor, we don't know how God put the song
already to them. They did it together. The focus was God. It was not for the singers,
the tension was not on the song, the tension was not on style, the tension was not on
who is conductor or who is the performer. The attention was on God. For me, it was a
new revelation from the Bible. How the creation worshipped God.

3. God gave the ability to make music to the man from the book of Genesis 2:23 we
see that man sang a first love song. Men and women are styled and equipped
differently by God for different duties, yet they all work toward the same end—
honouring and adoring God. From this point of view, I understood that this is the
premise or foundation of Church music.

4. Before the fall of man, whatever God created was good and included music too. It
doesn't matter whether it is secular or sacred. God's intention should be good. same
way our intentions also be good. No matter what songs they sing it is okay. From here
I understand that, as a worship leader, I always try to stick to the word of God. The
word of correcting us in our daily lives.

5. In Genesis chapter 4, we see the Lamech’s Song of Pride. It describes how a young
man was tortured and killed by Lamech. Music was still going on and God didn't cut
the music from non-Christian. The turning point is that I found that Adam's song was
sinless; we see the fruit of the spirit. But in the Lamech song, we see the Carnal nature
of the world. Lamech’s song was about Self glory. As worship leader, we should
always lead the people to God and the glory should belong to God. Sometimes
Christians say things like “God you say life is precious but I say my life is precious.”

God gave the foundation and he gave music for all. For us to enjoy him and enjoy his
creations. In that way, we can express his Glory. If we walk rightly with God, He
won't ever take away the gift that he has given.
6. In Exodus 15 we see, Songs are the best moments in the relationship between Israel
and Yahweh. The song emerges as a measurement of Israel's relationship to God and
the progress of their redemption. From this I understand. Christian songs are always
about who God is and what God has to say. When we participate in worship through
songs, we try to show how we should be in a relationship with God.

7. King David played the harp in Bethlehem's sheep fields as a young man. He worked
as a court musician for Saul, the first king of Israel, while he was young. But as he
matured, David started to record the inspired psalms or songs that he composed, and
as a result, his original works make up approximately half of the Book of Psalms.
What I'm learning from David's music ministry is that he puts God first in his life. He
worshipped God and lived according to God's will by asking God about everything.
David taught other musicians how to compose the song that pleased God. A music
ministry administration was formed during the reign of King. He composed songs and
fashioned many musical instruments and He organized, assigned and gave
responsibility to many people for worship. What I learned from this is how I
understand the example of a Shibi leader from King David. Moreover, He used
kingship to establish the kingdom of God.

8. When it comes to the New Testament, Jesus goes to the Synagogue Church and
chants the book of Isaiah. One of the psalms is also seen reciting Jesus during his
crucifixion. And we read from the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus and his disciples
sang psalms as they went up the Mount of Olives. Music was an integral part of Jesus'
ministry on earth. The Psalms connect the relationship between father and son. The
relevance of this song can also be seen in the fellowship of Jesus and his disciples.
Moreover, Jesus is speaking to the Father at the time of Jesus' crucifixion and pain
through the song. The song is an emotion that cannot be removed from a human
being.

9. From the Arian controversy, they composed songs like “Thalia”. These songs refer to
that there is a Triad, though not in equal measure. Their beings do not overlap with
one another. One is immensely more glorious than the other in terms of their
accomplishments. Because he lives without beginning, the father is to the son
foreigner in his essence. When this false doctrine spread through the Thalia, many
Christians lost their understanding of what the Trinity was. Many souls were lost
through this. Jesus is the way the truth and the life.

10. • The Canon LIX. Only the Canonical works of the Old and New Testaments may be
read in the church [including chanting by the congregation as response]. Privately
composed psalms and uncanonical works are not permitted. From this point of view,
it is impossible to improve the talents that God has given us. It is because of their
view of some other authorities and administrators that we are not able to further
improve these skills. If we look at the Bible, King David and King Solomon
composed songs. So, it is a God-given freedom to compose Christian songs.
11. In the history of the Church Fathers, we see that some of them spoke against music.
They say there are no songs, only God's Word exists. They say Music has an
intoxicating power and it distracts people from the word of God. What I understand
from this is that if the heart of a worship leader does not give importance to God or if
the word is not dwelling in his or her heart and that person only gives importance to
music, then it can be said that he or she is an addict to the music.

12. But some of them use songs for their weakness, love, unity, enjoyment, benefit and
passion to reach the word of God to others. But I like what Clement of Alexandria,
Protrepticus said Singing “with one voice” as ideal. The union of numerous, which
the divine concordance has called forward out of a variety of sounds and division,
gets to be one orchestra, taking after the one pioneer of the choir and instructor, the
Word, resting in that same truth and crying out, “Abba, Father.”

13. Each church father’s approach to music is based on their personality, character,
behaviour, the situation they grew up in and the theology they have studied. Each of
these steps greatly affects a community or a Christian population. If they have been
wrongly taught, that one nation will disappear.

14. For me, I can enjoy any genre of music but if the lyrics are clearly biblical and the
lyrics can be projected to be produced very clearly, I can incorporate that song into
my worship.

15. Oftentimes the songs act as a preaching during Christian worship. If a Christian song
is rich with personal faith, it helps lead a congregation into worship. Therefore, every
composer must have personal faith. Then only new and better Bible-based songs be
born.
