Design Scenario

Northfields International School has appointed you as designers to creatively redesign an

existing animation using stop motion on a presentation software such as Microsoft
PowerPoint or Google slides. The animation redesigned will be used to introduce computer
systems hardware, namely a minimum of 5 input and output devices, in a fun way, to
primary school Year 6 students at Northfields. This animation will make primary school
students aware of the different hardware that exist.

Unit2 is a follow up of Unit 1 Computer Systems Input and output devices covered in the
first half term of Academic Year 2023-2024. Unit 1 content covered will be used as the A2
Research plan, and A3 Analysis of existing products, to help you identify which devices to
use in your animation.

• Key concept: Communication

• Related concepts: Innovation & Function
• Global context: Fairness and development
• Statement of Inquiry: Introducing computer systems hardware through an innovative
way of using a presentation software to produce an animation tailoring its content to
the target audience
• ATL: Thinking skills & Research skills

The following logical plan is to be followed when designing your animation:

A1 Explain and Justify

Explain and Justify the Needs for a solution to a problem

for your client and target audience
(Criterion A, strand i)
Task 1: Computer systems hardware input and output devices

Describe the term hardware:

Hardware refers to the physical elements of a computer.

Describe the term input device, with 3 corresponding examples:

A piece of equipment/hardware which helps us enter data into a computer is an input

device.

EXAMPLE

Keyboard

Microphone

Scanner

Describe the term output device, with 3 corresponding examples:

A piece of equipment/hardware which gives out the result of the entered input, once it is
processed.

EXAMPLE

Monitor

Printer

Speaker

DD Unit2 AnimationHardwarePrimary6 Worksheet

Fill in the table below with at least 5 input and output devices, with their respective
descriptions linked to the computer systems; those are the hardware that you think you
might use in your animation.

# Input/output device Description

1 Keyboard An input device used to enter characters and

functions into the computer system by pressing
buttons, or keys

2 Scanner A device that captures images from photographic

prints, posters, magazine pages and similar sources
for computer editing and display

3 Microphone To pick up sound, just like a microphone used by a

singer on stage, and convert the audio sound waves
into electrical signals

4 Monitor An electronic output device used to display

information being entered and processed on a
computer

5 Printer A device that accepts text and graphic output from a

computer and transfers the information to paper

Task 2: Understanding the challenge

Statement of inquiry: Introducing computer systems hardware through an innovative way of

using a presentation software to produce an animation tailoring its content to the target
audience.

Global context (GC): Fairness and development

Who will be the client? Northfields International School

Who will be the Target Audience (TA)? Primary school Year 6 students

EXPLAIN the challenge/problem:

DD Unit2 AnimationHardwarePrimary6 Worksheet

We have to include input and output devices.

We have to add different types of hardware.

We have to make an animation using a presentation software.

Task 3: Justify the need for a solution to the problem

JUSTIFY (which is giving reasons) why the challenge is important (refer to the design
scenario), and remember to mention the link to the Global context, client and target
audience.

The challenge is important because we have young audiences who are most likely to lose
focus easily so the animation has to be interesting for them to pay attention.

Task 4: Possible solution

Describe the possible solution for the challenge in this unit

We could use PowerPoint which is a very efficient presentation software to create an animation show in
stop motion by including hardware input and output devices.

B2 Design ideas

Developing Design Ideas - Descriptions

(CRITERION B, Strand ii)
Describe 3 different design ideas of how you would use the animation provided to redesign
it to meet the requirements of the design scenario given. Highlight at least 5 design aspects
for each design idea, e.g. creative items to add to each hardware, background, creative
storyline, master slide, slide transition, custom animation, colour tones, sound effect, …

Design idea 1

1. Keyboard with wings

2. A sky background

3. Sound effects

4. Slide transition

5.

Design idea 2

1. Microphone with arms

2. Sound effects

3. Slide transition

4. Classroom background

B3 Chosen design

Selection of Chosen Design

(Criterion B, Strand iii)
Which one of the 3 design ideas described in B2 would be your chosen design, highlight the
main reason(s) what makes it the best design

Chosen design What makes it the best design?

Idea 3 Because it sound and looks like the most creative idea. I think it

would be different from the other ideas.💡

C2 technical skills

Creation of the Solution

(Criterion C, strand ii)
C2 will be assessed from the final product submitted; the main tools used should
demonstrate your technical skills, the content should show creativity, the product needs to
meet the needs of the client and should be tailor made for the target audience, and the final
product need to show how the design cycle has been followed, i.e. how criterion A and B
has informed criterion C.

Final product basic aspect

Red: Not achieved
(add more design aspects should you have used
Achieved Orange: Partially achieved
more than the list provided, e.g. master slide,
Green: Totally achieved
background, sound, etc)

C3 Follow the plan

Plan has been followed

(Criterion C, strand iii)
It is time to present your final product, showing that the plan was followed to create the
solution, and that it functions as intended and appropriately presented.

Justify changes made to the design

(Criterion C, strand iv)
Explain the changes made from your chosen design (B3) and the given logical plan (C1) to
create the final product.

Chosen design compared to final product

State what is similar? (Take from the table/list in C2 and C3)

State what is different? (Take from C2 and C3) (if there is a difference, state why)

Change Why did you make the change?

Reflection about the process:

1. I consider my developing ideas plan (criterion B) to be:

Very good, no changes to be made

Good, but it needed some changes

Not very good, it needed many changes

My plan did not work at all

Very different

Why?

3. In conclusion, analyzing the changes I made:

My chosen design idea is much better than the final product.

My chosen design idea is a bit better than the final product.

My chosen design idea is as good as the final product.

My final product is a bit better than the chosen design idea.

My final product is much better than the chosen design idea.
