Design of stirrups for punching shear

Shear reinforcement is needed when:

𝑉𝑢 > ∅𝑉𝐶 (𝑉𝐶 𝑖𝑠 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑣𝐶 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 22.6.5.2)
1- Check the effective depth d

a) 𝑉𝑢 ≤ ∅ × 0.5√𝑓𝑐′ 𝑏𝑜 𝑑 (Units in N and mm)

b) 𝑑 ≥ 150 𝑚𝑚
c) 𝑑 ≥ 16𝑑𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑢𝑝𝑠
If (a) or (b) or (c) is not O.K., increase the (d).
2- Compute the 𝑉𝑠
𝑉𝑢
𝑉𝑠 = − (0.17𝜆𝑠 √𝑓𝑐′ 𝑏𝑜 𝑑) (Units in N and mm)

(Depending on 𝑉𝑢 ≤ ∅(𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑠 ) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑉𝑐 = 0.17𝜆𝑠 √𝑓𝑐′ 𝑏𝑜 𝑑 (for concrete with stirrups))

3- Compute the spacing of the stirrups (S)

𝐴𝑣 .𝑓𝑦 .𝑑
𝑆= ≤ 𝑑2 (Units in N and mm)

𝐴𝑣 = 4𝐴 𝑣 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 (Interior column)

𝐴𝑣 = 3𝐴 𝑣 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 (Edge column)
𝐴𝑣 = 2𝐴 𝑣 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 (Corner column)
𝐴 𝑣 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 = (𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑠) × (𝐴 𝑠 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑢𝑝𝑠 )
3- Determine the extension of the stirrups on each side of the column using
𝑑
𝑉𝑢 = ∅ × 0.17𝜆𝑠 √𝑓𝑐′ 𝑏𝑜 𝑑 (𝑎𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑢𝑝 (𝑋))
