1.

It is bad enough that the narrator must move, but what makes this move even more
difficult for her?
The move from Fiji to Canada might be especially hard for the narrator to continue
onward with her life for many reasons. With only one suitcase to take with her to their
new home, she must decide what to bring with her and what to leave behind. “What
do I leave behind and what do I take with me? I am being told to divide myself into
pieces and choose which parts of me are the most important. My heart will remain
behind. It has told me its decision, and I cannot convince it otherwise. I will leave a
hollow version of myself.” It might also make it hard to move because her cousins,
friends, and family might change, she will change, and they will all be separated. Her
brother especially will make it hard to move on.

2. What does she mean when she says, "Just in case the future isn't kind" on page 4 of
the story?
The words in page four, “just in case the future isn’t kind” is her saying in case there
are no opportunities to come back and visit the blue mountains and see the waterfall
as she once hoped, she makes sure to say goodbye one final time.

3. How is the idea of the move different for the adults in the story? How do they see
the move?
The adults in the story have an entirely opposite feeling towards moving than the
young 17-year-old, they believe moving to Canada will have a better outcome than
continuing to live on the island. After the military coup in the capital of Fiji, George
Speight announced himself captain. Supposedly there is a bias in the government
towards the native making it unsafe to stay any longer.

4. Find five examples of color and explain how they symbolize her feelings.
“The unrelenting sun that makes the obnoxiously blue carpet on the floor even brighter” –
This may symbolize a great feeling of sadness
“The skies are red befitting my mood” – She feels a lot of anger
“Abbu returned a thick brown envelope” – The Brown envelope contains a message that
saddens the character
“When the setting sun paints the walls orange” – Might represent deep affection for the room
“By the sugarcane fields and smell the deep brown of the soil” – The brown might represent
the sadness of leaving her fields
