"Kikay" or “Francesca” is the New Yorker in Tondo

- Originally she was a Binondo girl but then she studied in New York to
learn more about Beauty and Hair Designs.

- She is a trying hard american, and forces her Mother to also act like
her. Her personality and behavior changed when she came back from
New York, which her friends find really strange.

- She is Tony’s Fiance.

"Nena"
- Nena is Kikay’s long term BFF, until Kikay left for New
York of course.
- She is another member of their group, the tomboyish,
demure but strong type of girl.
- She likes Tony but Totoy has a secret crush on her.
She is kind and true to her friends.
"Aling Atang" or "Mrs. Mendoza"
- The ever caring Mother of Kikay, she is a true Binondo
girl and hates the way Kikay wants her to act as a
sophisticated american.
- She is caring and loving to her daughter and her
daughter’s friends.
- Despises Totoy for being an imbecile but enjoys his
company as well
"Tony"

- Tony is the sophisticated “Tondo Boy” of the story. He is one of the

main characters.

- He is the lover of both Kikay and Nena.

- He is kind, sweet, friendly and caring to his friends.

"Totoy"

- The original kanto/Tondo/achupz boulevard boy.

- The prankster yet sensitive boy who always follows Nena wherever
she goes.

- He is Tony’s bestfriend.
- He is kind, sweet, funny, sensitive, quite idiotic but very loyal and
true to his friends.

MAIN CHARACTERS
SYMBOLS USED IN THE PLAY
The “Mango Tree” symbolizes their cherished memories. The four of
them namely Kikay, Tony, Nena and Totoy were childhood friends.
Every happy and sorrowful moments that they encountered was
witnessed by the mango tree. The mango tree was also a symbol of
their love and friendship.

The name “Francesca” symbolizes acculturation. Francesca was away

for a long time and she now adopted the norms and mores of the
Americans. She dresses like an American, shares their values and
interests. Francesca has become highly acculturated into American
culture.

CONFLICT OF THE PLAY

THEME OF THE PLAY:

The conflict in the story New Yorker in Tondo is that Kikay has taken
on all of the style and attitude of New York and brought it back with
her to Philippines. It portrays the actuality how most people likely
forget their real identity once they move overseas. And this is true
among some Filipinos abroad although we can't really blamed those
folks who altered their ways because they have to incorporate
themselves in the new environment that they are in to get a better life.

Sa huli, inaanyayahan namin kayo na patuloy na manuod sa mga

susunod na mangyayari sa buhay ni Kikay at sama-sama nating buksan
ang ating mga isipan sa mga aral na nais iparating at ipaalala ng dula
para satin- at ito ang pagpapatibay ng pagmamahal sa sariling atin at
sama-samang ipagmalaking tayo ay Pilipino.

New Yorker in Tondo is a play about a girl named Kikay who has fallen
in love with the concrete jungle, New York, and has forgotten about
her native land, the Philippines. In the story, the protagonist neglects
her motherland and changes her ways, even her name, and adopts the
lavish lifestyle of a New Yorker. She willingly leaves friends and vows,
and her lover. As fate brings her back to her roots, she encounters
different conflicts with the characters and in the end is found
struggling to gain her love back.

The message of the playwright is that love and love for the country
wins. One should never forget to look back at where he came from.
Love for one’s cherished traditions will always go beyond the love for
worldly things and the lavish lifestyle. As for Kikay, she learns that
“there really is no place like home.”

KIND OF PLAY
New Yorker in Tondo is a famous Filipino one-act play of Marcelino
Agana Jr. written in 1956. It is a comedy for everyone because it
delivers more value and meaning by transcending the belief that one
can take out of the Philippines, but the Philippines cannot be taken out
in oneself. It depicts accurately the average Filipino’s faux love for the
country which was completely lost when exposed to a foreign
country’s cultural aesthetic. This satire is being portrayed by Kikay
who acculturate the New Yorker’s manner, style and custom.

- sa mga magulang po na isasali sa face to fave classes ang anak ay kinakailangan po ninyong mag fill-
out ng consent form at waiver sa school.

- Mga kailangan sa face to face classes:

1 big notebook
ballpen
1 buong papel (Grade 4)
1 pocket hand saniter / alcohol
inuming tubig

- 7:30 po ang simula ng klase pero 7 am ay dapat nasa school na ang bata upang maisagawa ang
pagpapakuha ng temperatura, pagsusulat sa health declaration form, paghuhugas at pagsasanitize ng
kamay.

- magsuot ng uniporme - maaari namang puting t shirt at kahit anong pang ibaba.

- sikaping naligo o malinis ang bata bago umalis ng bahay

- tiyaking may facemask at may reserbang facemask

- ang klase ay tatagal ng 4-5 oras

- hindi na pinahihintulutang lumabas ng classroom ang bata upang bumili sa labas

- magdala ng kanikaniyang pagkain ang bata.

- Ang bilang ng bata ay hahatiin sa SET A at SET B.

- Ang SET A ay papasok na sa Martes - May 31 - June 2, 2022
