Geometric Construction
From the last lessons, you are introduced to basic construction and
geometry using AutoCad software. To further improve your skills, we
will do series of exercise for you to follow. This will help you grow in
your CAD skills using combinations of commands.
Geometric Construction
Exercise 1: Abstract frames
1. Create two (2) square with 80 x 80 units.
Place it side by side. [note that the side of
the square should be joined together/poly
line and not a single line when selected]
2. Start with the left side. Offset it by 10 units
going inwards. Repeat it until it is the same
with the figure.

3. On the square (right side), draw a polyline

connecting the middle point of each of the
side of the square. Creating a diamond like
figure with 56.6 units length.
4. And then offset it by 14.1 inwardly and
outwardly. Repeat it until it is near to the
figure shown. Use trim if necessary to the
excess lines.
Geometric Construction
Exercise 2: Wrench
1. Use Line to draw a horizontal line 7.5 units Step 1
long near the middle of your graphics
window. Draw two vertical lines that are
3.00 units long and 4.5 units apart, as Step 2
shown in figure.
2. Use Snap to draw a 1-inch radius circle with
its center at the intersection of the horizontal
line and the left vertical line. Step 3
3. Copy the circle to the other side.
4. Next, use the Offset command on your own
to offset the horizontal construction line a
distance of 0.5 units to either side of itself to Step 4
create the body of the wrench.
5. Now use the Trim command to trim the lines
that you created with the Offset command
so that they intersect neatly with the circles. Step 5

Exercise 2: Wrench
6. Create a new layer and name it “Centerline”, Step 6
choose linetype to center for the selected lines
as seen on the figure.
7. Change the linetype scale factor [try 0.75] of
the centerline until the linetype is appropriate.
And then, select the vertical lines and change Step 7
again its linetype scale factor [try 1.5] until it is
the same on to the figure shown.
8. Use the Fillet command, with a radius of 0.5,
to add the fillets on your own.
9. Create a circumscribed pentagon with 0.5
radius on the middle of the two center line. Step 8
Additionally, create another inverted polygon
with the same size on the other side [you can try
creating another polygon or copy and rotate the
first one]. Step 9
Geometric Construction
Exercise 3: Geneva Cam
1. Create two (2) circles with the following
diameters, 4 and 1. Offset the smaller circle
with 0.25 to create the third diameter.
2. Create a centerline [both horizontal and
vertical] from the middle of the circle.
3. Create a construction line by offsetting the
vertical centerline by 0.25 on both sides.
Also add a construction line with 60 degrees Step 1 Step 2
angle [should be longer than the largest
diameter]

Step 3
Geometric Construction
Exercise 3: Geneva Cam
4. Create a construction circle with diameter of
5.14 and 2.5. Then, create circle [A] with 0.5
diameter using the construction lines as a
guide.
5. Draw another circle, with radius of 0.9 as seen
in the figure. Use the construction lines as a
guide.
6. Trim and delete the other lines and figures Step 5
until it is the same with the example.
Step 4

Step 6
Geometric Construction
Exercise 3: Geneva Cam
7. Mirror the pattern from the vertical center line.
8. Use polar array to create the pattern.
9. Finally clean the figure by deleting and
trimming the construction lines. And by adding
centerlines and dimensions.
