CHAPTER ONE

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter explains the logic for this study, its aim, research questions, conceptual
framework, hypothesis, scope and limitations, and its definition of terms.

Introduction

One of the well-known online gaming applications is Mobile Legends (ML) also known
as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), a game where you can interact and hone your skills.
Mobile Legends is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game, created by Montoon, a
company which focuses on creating games. (Xu, Z. and Yuan, J. ,2016). This game was released
in 2016, and it is available for free on both Android and iOS. It managed to capture the attention
of a wide range of players, including young children, teenagers, and adults. Mobile Legends has

now become a popular game in more than 200 countries, with hundreds of millions of players
worldwide. The first game to be confirmed as a medal game for the 2019 Southeast Asian
Games' inaugural esports competition is Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), also known as
Mobile Legends (SEA Games. Since its founding, Mobile Legends has been designed
specifically for mobile devices, allowing it to be enjoyed by everyone unlike any other MOBA
games, which can only be played on a Personal Computer (PC). Of course, it is because the game
can be played anywhere without being required to sit in front of a computer. However, Mobile
Legends is currently being developed so that, like other MOBA games, can be played using
emulators. There will, of course, be differences when playing on a PC versus a tablet or
smartphone. As a result, players can consider playing on Personal Computer (PC) or mobile
depending on their preferences (Yama, 2021). Mobile Legends presents two teams of five
against each other, with the goal of destroying the opponent's base. Each player gets to choose a
hero at the beginning of the game. Each hero has a variety of skill sets and abilities., divided into
six specific roles: tank, fighter, assassin, marksman, support, and mage. Furthermore, these roles
indicate the duties of players on their respective teams (Chua, 2019).

With the evolution of online gaming, the numbers of players increased. In addition, as
mobile gaming got famous, a lot of people have the chance to play games wherever they are. In
the last century, online gaming has developed rapidly. Each industry is heavily influenced, and
this includes the online gaming companies. The gaming world provides individuals with an
escape from reality. Also, according to several scientific studies, playing video games might help
a person's coordination between their body's various systems and sharpen their thinking skills
(Smith, 2019). Although using such advanced technology is very intriguing and online games
can offer challenges to improve one's abilities, many people who became overly fascinated with
it became preoccupied and disregard their responsibilities. It also affects their ability to follow
their schedules. Most matches in Mobile Legends (ML) last 10 to 20 minutes, however some
players can spend more than an hour pushing ranks. Mobile Legends (ML) addiction is a serious
issue that should not be dismissed since once you start playing, you'll keep playing till you lose

track of time. Before going to sleep, players play this game. It is most frequently played between
the hours of 7 and 10 o'clock, therefore it can be challenging for gamers to fall asleep.
Furthermore, many Mobile Legend (ML) players do not get enough sleep and remain awake to
play till the next day (Ringgo, 2021). Even though playing Mobile Legends can be entertaining,
letting yourself become completely absorbed in it may affect your academic performance as a
student.

Theoretical Framework

According to Sernadilla’s (2021) theory, some people believe that playing games is
beneficial for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, opportunity and competition, comfort,
satisfaction, human engagement, and even mentally escaping from the reality. They play not only
because they are serious, but also because they want to feel relieved. Students often feel stressed
during the school day as a consequence of the amount of work they have to do and playing helps
to relieve that stress. Students learn in unexpected ways, but inappropriate use of online games
causes some problems, such as being distracted in class. Furthermore, where the child's attention
is divided, their health and social life are unknowingly affected.

Mobile gaming addiction occurs when users become overly dependent on mobile games
and experience an enormous desire to play despite the negative consequences to their lives.
Addicts of mobile gaming play these games multiple times and for increasingly long periods of
time (Sutphen, 2021).

Conceptual Framework

playing Mobile Legends affects the communication of parents and students in Tangerang.
According to the findings of the research study, the students in Tangerang show that there were
issues related to interactions with others and their health problems. Online game addicts tend to
ignore how they have interpersonal relationships because they only focus on online games. On
the aspect of online game addiction in Mobile Legends, which leads to interpersonal and health-
related problems, online games addicts are less concerned with their health issues, such as lack
of sleep, not maintaining body hygiene and irregular eating patterns. This is due to the long-
playing time of Mobile Legends.

Players of Mobile Legends are addicted to online games. According to the findings, most
participants were on the moderate level of addiction. Which these individuals begin to
experience countless issues in their life like work problems, physical and psychological, and
their social life. Moreover, addiction for adults develops as a “consequence of life events, such as
unemployment”, which leads to “retreat into the virtual world” and they consider online games
as an important part of their life. “Online Games Addiction among Mobile Legends's Players”
(Safitri et al., 2019).

According to the study of Dananjaya et al., 2019, entitled “Students' Perception on

Online Game Mobile Legends for Vocabulary Development”, playing Mobile Legends is
effective on the students' perception in their vocabulary development. Based on the findings of
the research study, all the respondents agreed that they met new vocabularies, discovered how to
spell, and learn proper pronunciation of the words in the games’ system. They claimed that their
vocabulary knowledge is expanding whenever they play Mobile Legends.

Playing mobile legends games affects students' learning motivation. The findings showed
that students who play Mobile Legends have a negative impact on their learning motivation and
that the parents and teachers has a role to accomplish, and it is to handle them to avoid being
addicted to Mobile Legends and to make sure that it does not interfere with the students’

motivation to learn. “The Impact of Mobile Legends Games on Student Learning Motivation:
The Role of Parents and Teachers” (Rochmayanti et al., 2021).

As shown in the recent study of Mubarak et al., 2022, entitled “The Intensity of Playing
Mobile Legends Games with College Student Academic Procrastination”, playing Mobile
Legends has a relationship with the students’ academic procrastination. The higher the intensity
of playing Mobile Legends game, the more it affects the students and procrastinate and vice
versa.

Local Literature and Studies

An early work by Balagtas et al., 2019, entitled “Effects of Video Games: Mobile
Legends on the Study Habit of Junior and Senior High School Students of PAX High School”,
playing Mobile Legends has a bad effect on the study habit of the students in PAX High School.
Based on the findings of the research study, most of the students were influenced by their friends
and were willing to give time in playing instead of studying. Sacrificing their proper nutrition
and time of sleep, just to gain more time to play Mobile Legends.

Playing mobile legends affects grade 12 students at Caloocan City Business High School
who are studying information and communication technology. According to the findings of the
research study, students at the Caloocan City business high school who play mobile legends
spend more time playing than studying or interacting with others. Students may experience a
shift in their psychological outlook, which could lead to tardiness, lack of concentration, and
problems controlling their anger, all of which would negatively impact their ability to manage
their time and perform well academically. “The Effects of Playing Mobile Legends on the
academic performance of Grade 12 Information and Communication Technology Students of
Caloocan City Business High School” (Lagunday et al., 2019).

Engineering students at Eastern Visayas State University Tanuan Campus have become
addicted to Mobile Legends. According to the findings of the research study, playing online
mobile games has a significant effect on the academic performance of the university students.
The study's findings highlight the significance of the factor's students' amount of time spent
playing online mobile games at home and the most frequently played online mobile game at
school. Hence, students' poor academic performance was linked to their participation in online
mobile games. “Mobile Games and Academic Performance of University Students” (De los
Santos et al., 2020).

According to the study of Cagalitan et al., 2020, entitled “Influence of Mobile Legends to
the Academic Performance of Selected Junior High School Students in Asian College of
Technology”, playing Mobile Legends does not affect the academic performance of the students.
Based on the findings, most of the students sometimes play Mobile Legends and their playing
time only exceeds less than 1 hour per day. Furthermore, they got a good grading average and do
not skip or miss class for Mobile Legends.

learning modules amidst covid-19 pandemic. According to the study's findings, students who
play Mobile Legends stated that the primary reason they became involved in the game was
because of COVID 19. Moreover, the major factors that contributed to their ML addiction and
prevented them from completing their Learning Modules (LMs) are stress, depression, anxiety, a
sense of isolation, and a lack of communication. As a result of their use of mobile phones for
online gaming, the participants became addicted to playing Mobile Legends. “Ml O Lm: Stories

This chapter shows the research methodologies used in the study that can gain definite
results. This includes the research design, respondents of the study, sampling technique,
instrumentation, data gathering method, and data processing and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study is significantly a qualitative and quantitative research by nature. The

researchers used a descriptive research design to gather exquisite answers that can satisfy the
problem and the objective of this research study. Moreover, this research aimed to find out the
effects of playing Mobile Legends on the academic performance of students.

A descriptive research design is a type that seeks relevant data to analyze an issue,
situation, or population in a systematic manner. This specifically assists in answering the what,
when, where, and how questions about the research problem, rather than the why (Vexco, 2021).

According to Hoover in his study “What is Qualitative Vs. Quantitative Study?” in 2021,
the essence of the intended result is one of the factors that distinguishes qualitative studies from
quantitative studies. Qualitative studies seek to learn from the specifics of those they are
studying, also known as their respondents. Conclusions are drawn from a study by collecting,
making comparisons, and analyzing participants' opinions and suggestions. The "why" behind
such a phenomenon, connection, or behavioral patterns is frequently the target of qualitative
research. While quantitative data on the other hand, is numerically analyzed to create a
mathematical view of a tendency or relation. These statistical findings could give insight on
cause-and-effect relationships. They could either confirm or reject the initial hypothesis of the
research. Whether the result is either positive or negative, it can bring awareness and concrete
action. Quantitative approach is commonly concerned with figuring out "what" and "how" about
a problem, comparison, or actions.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the senior high school students at Trinity Polytechnic
College, Inc. for the school year 2022 – 2023. These participants were selected through cluster
sampling. This sampling method is a type of probability sampling in which the researchers
divide a large population into smaller groups known as clusters then draw a random sample from
those groups (Simkus, 2022).

The researchers will use the following formula in getting the respondents.

¿ of respondents
×100
expected % response rate

Step 1: Insert the value of the target respondents and your expected response rate.

Step 2: Divide the target respondents to your expected response rate.

x = respondents

40
x= × 100
100 %

Step 3: Multiply the answer by one hundred (100).

x = 40.00
You will get the total number of your respondents which is forty (40) participants.

The distribution of respondents in this study shown below.

ICT – Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Hence, the researchers obtained forty (40) respondents.

Sampling Technique

This research study used the probability sampling method. More specifically, the
researchers focus on using the cluster sampling in collecting the respondents needed as the basis
of this study.

Probability sampling is a sampling method in which a sample, or a subset of the

population, is chosen at random. It is also known as random sampling at times. To be considered
random, every research unit (e.g., person, business, or institution in your population) must have
an equal chance of being chosen. This is typically accomplished through a random selection
process, like a drawing (Nikolopoulou, 2022).

Cluster sampling is a probability sampling technique that is frequently used to study huge
populations, particularly those that are geographically separated. Researchers use cluster
sampling to divide a population into smaller groups known as clusters. They then draw at
random from these clusters to create a sample (Thomas, 2020).

Instrumentation

The researchers gathered the data using a survey questionnaire form that was made from
Google forms. The survey questionnaires consist of items and are designed to analyze the effect
of playing Mobile Legends on the academic performances of senior high school learners at
Trinity Polytechnic College Inc. for the school year 2022-2023.

A questionnaire is a type of research tool that is used to conduct surveys. It includes

specific questions designed to help respondents understand a topic from their perspective. In
addition, closed-ended, open-ended, short-form, and long-form questions are common in
questionnaires. While surveys is the collection, sampling, analysis, and interpretation of data
from a group of people (Amaresan, 2022).

This research used the survey method, in which participants respond to close-ended
questions. To collect data, the research will follow the procedure below:

1. The research wrote a letter to Mrs. Jesusa G. Gendrala, the school principal of Trinity
Polytechnic College Inc. of the Novaliches Branch and Mr. Clark Louise Matias, the
practical research 2 advisor to ask their approval to conduct a survey to the students at
Trinity Polytechnic College Inc.
2. The questionnaire provide by the researchers was circulated by distributing the survey
questions to the senior high school learners of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc.
through a link sent via the respondents' messenger accounts.
3. The collected data of the researchers were examined to see if there were any errors in
their responses.

Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

The researchers selected the most suitable statistical approaches to analyze and
comprehend the study’s findings.

1. Percentage formula was used to calculate the number of students who choose each option
in terms of 100.

f × 100
P=
N

Where:

P = percentage for a category

F = frequency or number of responses per category

N = total number of respondents

2. Mean score was used to find the average effect of playing Mobile Legends to the senior
high school learners based on the answers of the students.
