CHAPTER ONE

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter explains the logic for this study, its aim, research questions, conceptual
framework, hypothesis, scope and limitations, and its definition of terms.

Introduction

Choosing the right Senior High School strand will help motivate you for your future career.
Once you choose a strand you like, studying becomes more enjoyable since the strands are
designed and specialized to match your interests. However, some learners may experience
uncertainties and challenges that lead them to reconsider their initial strand choice. Most
significant effects in disinclination on choice of strand include the poor performance and
dissatisfaction. In addition, students enrolled in the wrong choice of strand experienced low level
of involvement, unable to concentrate, and are not able to enjoy some subjects to the point of
shifting or quitting. (Bayungan M, 2019).

Shifting of strand has been an obstacle encountered by some of the students under the K to
12 program. Shifting could either be the result of the students' inability to meet the set standards
in a specific strand, or simply because of the student's change of preference. There are instances
that some students are forced to shift to another strand; and by 'forced', it means that some
students wanted to pursue and continue the path in which they were in but are now not able to do
so, for some set standards were not met due to some reasons.

One of our respondents Noemi D. Pascua, a student from Coronado's School Of Quezon
City Inc. who change their strand from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) to GAS (General Academic Strand) had made a decision of shifting for the reason
of experiencing difficulty in adopting the topics/lessons and admitted that she chooses the wrong

strand due to peer pressure. " Nahirapan kasi ako tas napilit lang ako ng mga kaibigan ko na
sumama sa kanila" she said.

In choosing a senior academic track and strand, a student should be a risk-taker. That is
why deciding and choosing has a lot of consequences. Just like when you are going to choose a
strand and track, there is a lot of factors that need to be considered before you make a decision.
The students should first become aware of the need for a career. Every incoming Senior High
student needs a wise choice in decision making. (Supeer, 2005).

Since the implementation of the SHS program, there have been debates about whether
students should be allowed to shift from one strand to another or continue with their chosen
strand until graduation. The Department of Education (DepEd) has allowed students to shift to
another strand, but only within the same track. (Edukasyon, 2020).

The following are the tracks mentioned as follows:

1. Academic Track - students can choose from four different strands: General Academic
Strand (GAS) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM);
Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM); and Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS).
2. Technical Vocational Livelihood - The SHS program has a
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track, which has four strands: Agri-Fishery Arts
(AFA), Home Economics (HE), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and
Industrial Arts ( IA)
3. Arts and Design - The Arts and Design Track covers a wide range of art forms: Theater,
Music, Dance, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, and Media Arts.
4. Sports - The Sports Track is for students who are interested in sports-related careers, i.e.
athlete development, fitness training, coaching, etc.

In Senior High School, students are given the opportunity to choose a specific strand that
they will pursue for two years. However, there may be instances where students decide to shift to
another strand or continue with their current one. Shifting strands means that a student decides to

change their current strand to another one. This could be due to various reasons such as a change
in career goals, personal interests, or academic performance. Understanding the factors that
influence Grade 11 learners' decisions to shift or continue in their academic strands is crucial for
educational institutions, educators, and policymakers. By gaining insights into the
decision-making process, support systems can be developed to assist learners in making
informed choices that align with their interests, strengths, and career goals.

This research builds upon existing knowledge on academic strand choice by focusing
specifically on Grade 11 learners. By adopting a naturalistic approach, the study aims to capture
the lived experiences, perspectives, and narratives of learners as they navigate the critical
juncture of selecting their academic strands. By exploring their decision-making processes,
factors considered during the initial strand choice, and the reasons behind their decisions to shift
or continue, this study will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of this decision-making
process.

The anticipated findings of this research will contribute to the existing understanding of
academic strand choice and decision-making among Grade 11 learners. By uncovering the
complexities and motivations that influence learners' decisions to shift or continue, this study
aims to inform educational institutions, policymakers, and educators in designing effective
support systems, career guidance programs, and interventions that cater to the diverse needs of
Grade 11 learners. Additionally, this research aims to empower learners by providing them with
valuable information and resources to make informed decisions about their academic pathways
that nurture their interests and talents.

This qualitative research focuses on increasing the understanding in order to know the
decision-making of grade 11 learners of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc. Novaliches Campus.
This study aims to provide insights that can inform educational institutions and policymakers in
supporting learners' academic and career development. This prompted the researchers to conduct
this study with the goal of determining why and what is better to do, is to shift or continue in the
strand chosen, and what the impact of this decision is.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine if the grade 11 students of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc.
sy 2022-2023 are going to shift or continue their strand.

This study sought to answer this following ;

1. Why do you think why many grade 11 students are still confused about their chosen strand?
2. What is the perspective of a students of shifting a strand in terms of the following:
2.1 Difficulty
3. What are the reasons why a student changes a decision on the strand that they are taking?

Conceptual Framework

This figure explains the conceptual framework. This shows two variables: shift or continue in
the strand choice as the independent variable and its effect on the grade 11 learners of Trinity
Polytechnic College, Inc. as the dependent variable. This determines how shifting or continuing
the strand affects the grade 11 learners in Trinity Polytechnic College Inc.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains foreign and local literature reviewed by researchers from previous
studies conducted as references for this study. In order to provide the background and
information necessary for the completion of this study, it also analyzes some studies and
materials. The information presented in this chapter will be used to extend and impart knowledge
relevant to this study.

Foreign Literature and Studies

According to (Dupan et al, 2019), choosing the right career path is becoming more and
more important for young students today, hence, students have to take into account many
things when choosing a career and college major, especially their senior high school strand.
Selecting a strand to be taken in senior high is a crucial decision for students’, because their
futures are inclined with it. Therefore, selecting a strand is a crucial phase for every student
because of the factors that need to be considered before they arrive at a certain career. It is
crucial for every student in such a way that they have to consider their financial status, parents
and peer suggestion, and also their self-choice in acting on it. However, the drive to continue or
change their initial chosen strand or shift to another depends on the various factors (internal or
external) that also affect their decision in choosing their initial strand. Several studies revealed
that the factors that can affect students’ decision making in selecting strands can also affect
their decisions in choosing to continue or shift to a different track/strand. Some of these factors
are a parent's decision, peer influence, and a student's abilities.

The study conducted by (Gati et al, 2019), career choice is one of the most important
decisions people make in their life. However, many people find it difficult to make such
decisions, and the changes in the world of work in the 21st century have only increased the
complexity of exploring career options and alternatives.

Making a good career choice will most likely be hard unless you have tried it. When it
applied to the senior high school program, using John Holland's Theory of Career Choice as the
framework and assuming the academic strand chosen as a surrogate for career choice, a
correspondence must exist between a senior high school student's personality and the academic
The study's findings revealed that senior high school students at the participating institution were
generally unsure about their choices. The researchers recommend using the Career Decision
Making Intervention (CDMI) framework as a tool to reduce the observed uncertainty and, as a
result, facilitate students' seamless progression from basic to higher education. strand chosen
(Torres et al, 2019).

One of the most significant decisions a person makes in their lives is their career. The
intricacy of choosing a career and researching employment options is something that many
people struggle with, and changes in the workplace in the twenty-first century have only made
matters worse. (Landman-Tal et al, 2019).

As shown in the recent study of (Malaguial et al, 2023). The findings show that academic
performance is the only factor affecting the decision-making of a student with respect to
choosing the academic strand. And it also shows that socioeconomic status, job opportunities,
and parents are not a big influence with respect to students' decision-making in connection with
choosing shs strand. It also shows that there is no significant relationship between the students’
preferred strand and the factors affecting it because academic performance is the only factor that
can affect and influence the students’ decisions.

Local Literature and Studies

An early work by (Llego, 2021), investing an effort to learn and know more about the
strands you were taking, somehow gives you an instruction that leads you in the right way. At
first, picking the best strand for you can be enjoyable, but actually enrolling in and preparing for
specialized courses is quite another. However, discovering your interest and willingness are more
impactful in selecting a strand for the reason that it will last until the end of your educational
journey. Be sure you enjoy the direction or path you are going to go. Your SHS track decision
may be based on what you usually do both inside and outside of school. There will always be a
SHS track that is appropriate for your interest or pastime.

At senior high school, the disciplines are more generic than in college, where the courses
you choose will decide the exact subjects you study (Marin, 2020).

Recognizing the factors that may affect students’ career decisions is essential in
developing strategies that may help them make intelligent career choices. Identifying these
factors was beneficial in developing a career decision-making tool and predicting the career
strand of incoming SHS students. Individuals whom the students trust the most can play a vital
role in guiding them in career-decision planning. Hence, career selection and development
programs that target these key individuals (parents and the community) should be encouraged to
guide students to make sound decisions. Moreover, the insights that can be obtained can be
helpful to education institutions in facilitating students’ success in the chosen career track. For
instance, it can enable educators to align their teaching materials and pedagogical strategies with
their characteristics and interests. (Nazareno et al. 2019).

One of the salient features of the Senior High School curriculum is that every student in
this recent generation is prepared for their future career and ready to face challenges and some of
them change their strand because they sometimes don't understand it or sometimes they are
confused so they shift their strand. The success of this endeavor is believed to be measured by
the graduates' alignment of the high school strand and the course they have to pursue in college.
There is however a noticeable situation in which students enroll in college courses that are not
associated with their track or strand of senior high school. (Quintos, 2022).

Individuals who choose a career that matches his/her interests are likely to feel more
satisfied and motivated. Interests promote career choice goals, such as having career intentions,
developing career plans, and choosing a career direction to engage in (M. Bernal, 2021).

According to the study of (D.Cabelles et al, 2022), one of the great features of the high
school curriculum is that each student of this young generation is prepared and ready for the
challenges of their future careers. The success of this effort is considered to be measured by
whether graduates enter high school and adapt to the courses they must take at university.
However, there is a surprising situation in which students are enrolled in college courses that are
not related to careers or high school pathways. One of the main reasons why some students lose
interest in college is the gap between their high school experience and college expectations,
which is the subject of this study. According to the study’s findings, improving career guidance
programs, policy papers, and enhanced monitoring and evaluation practices are recommended.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter shows the research methodologies used in the study that can gain definite
results. This includes the research design, locale respondents, sampling technique,
instrumentation and data gathering method.

Research Design

This study is significantly qualitative research. The researchers employ a naturalistic

action research design that is appropriate for achieving the study's purpose and objectives.

Action research is a research method that aims to simultaneously investigate and solve an
issue. In other words, as its name suggests, action research conducts research and takes action at
the same time. It was first coined as a term by ( MIT Kurt Lewin, 1944).

Action research is a qualitative approach to problem solving in social systems such as

schools and other organizations. The emphasis is on resolving the presenting problem through
knowledge generation and action within the social system in which the problem exists.

Locale Respondents

This study will be conducted in TRINITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE INC. at 892

Building., Quirino Highway, Barangay Gulod, Novaliches Quezon City. The respondents will be
the Grade 11 students, and will be given a survey using Google Form through their respective
messenger accounts. The researchers chose the place of implementation because it will give the
researchers the needed information if the students of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc. are going
to shift or continue their strand or track. This study will be conducted in the second semester of
the academic year 2022-2023.

Sampling Technique

The researchers used the non-probability sampling method, more specifically, the
researchers used the snowball sampling in collecting the opinions of the respondents, as it is
needed as the basis of this study. Snowball sampling techniques were used in this investigation.
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen by this sampling
technique, which also provides a roughly equal representation of the data. The technique is
appropriate for this investigation since it just involves one random selection and requires little
prior demographic knowledge. Research conducted on this sample should have high internal and
external validity and be less prone to flaws in research, such as sampling and selection bias,
because it uses randomization.

Instrumentation

The researchers utilized a researcher to make an survey questionnaire regarding "Shift or

Continue: A Follow-Up Study on the Strand Choice of Grade 11 Learners in Trinity Polytechnic
College, Inc. For the School Year of 2022-2023” A questionnaire is a research tool question used
to collect information. The researchers utilized an interview structured questionnaire with ten
open-ended questions to gain deeper understanding of the opinions and perceptions of the
respondents.

Data Gathering Method

Once we have decided what design our research is going to be based on, the next
important thing we do is have the validation of conducting an interview among Grade 11
students of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc., that’ll be granted by Mr. Clark Louise Matias,
Practical Research 1 Advisor of Trinity Polytechnic College Inc., after receiving the consent, the
researchers presented the study's objectives to the chosen responders, and they later verified that

each participant met their predetermined criteria. The interview will be collected through
randomly picking Grade 11 student which is available and willing to have a brief interview and
answering the question given to them wholeheartedly. The problem of shifting or continuing
their strands will be identified based on their answers. After the completion of the said
procedures, the results were verified, added up, interpreted, and analyzed.
