(Internet of Things & Computer Science and Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: Answer one question from each unit.
All questions carry equal marks.
5 × 14 = 70M
UNIT-I
1. a) Let X be the number of heads in a single toss of 4 fair coins. Construct the probability
distribution for X. And hence determine i. P( X  2) and ii. P(1  X  3) (7M)

b) For a normally distributed variate with mean 1 and SD 3, Find the probabilities that
(i) 3.43 ≤ X ≤ 6.19 and (ii) 1.43 ≤ X ≤ 6.19 (7M)
(OR)

2. a) A continuous random variable X has a probability density function f ( x)  4 x3 , for

0 ≤ x ≤ 1. Find the mean and variance of the random variable X. Also find probability
less than 0.5. (7M)
b) A person receives an average of 4 telephone calls a day. Assuming Poisson distribution,
what is the probability that on a given day he will receive (i) No telephone call (ii) Exactly
only call (iii) At least two telephone calls (iv) At most two telephone calls. (7M)
UNIT-II
3. A population consists of four numbers 4, 8, 12 and 16. Consider all possible samples of size
two which can be drawn with replacement from this population. Then find (i). The mean of
the population (ii) standard deviation of the population (iii) the sampling distribution of means
(iv) mean of the sampling distribution of means (v) standard deviation of the sampling
distribution of means. (14M)
(OR)
4. a) Suppose a population consists of four numbers 3, 7, 11 and 15. Consider all possible
samples of size two which can be drawn without replacement from this population. Then
find (i) The mean of the population (ii) standard deviation of the population (iii) the
sampling distribution of means. (8M)
b) A random sample of size 100 is taken from a population with   5.1 Given that the
sample mean is 21.6. Obtain maximum error of population mean and hence construct 95%
confidence interval for the population mean. (6M)
UNIT-III
5. a) Two types of new cars produced in U.S.A. are tested for petrol mileage, one sample is
consisting of 42 cars averaged 15 Kmpl while the other sample consisting of 80 cars
averaged 11.5 Kmpl with population variances as 12  2.0,  22  1.5 respectively. Test
whether there is any significance difference in the petrol consumption of these two types
of cars. (7M)

b) A wholesaler in apples claims that only 4% of the apples supplied by him are defective. A
random sample of 600 apples contained 36 defective apples. Test the claim of the
wholesaler. (7M)
(OR)
6. a) To test the effect of a new pesticide on rice production, a farm land was divided into 60
units of equal areas with all portions having identical qualities as to soil, exposure to
sunlight etc. The new pesticide is applied to 30 units while old pesticide to the remaining
30 units. Is there reason to believe that the new pesticide is better than the old pesticide if
the mean number of Kgs of rice harvested /unit using new pesticide is 496.31Kgs with S.D
of 17.18Kgs while for old pesticide is 485.41Kgs and 14.73Kgs respectively? (7M)
b) A die was thrown 1200 times and the number 6 was obtained 236 times. Can the die be
considered fair at 0.01 level of significance? (7M)
UNIT-IV
7. a) A random sample of 10 boys had the following I.Q’s 70, 120, 110, 101, 88, 83, 95,98,
107, 100. Do these data support the assumption of a population mean I.Q of 100? (8M)
b) Explain the chi-square test for Independence of Attributes. (6M)
(OR)
8. a) Explain the paired t-test. (6M)
b) Test runs with 6 models of an experimental engine showed that they operated for 24, 28,
21, 23, 32 and 22 minutes with a gallon of a certain kind of fuel. If the probability of a
Type I error is to be at most 0.01, is this evidence against hypothesis that on the average,
this kind of engine will operate for at least 29 minutes per gallon with this kind of fuel?
Assume normality. (8M)
UNIT-V
9. a) The regression lines of two variables x and y are 3x+2y=26 and 6x+y=31. Find (i) means
of x and y (ii) coefficient of correlation (iii) if the variance of x is 4 then what is standard
deviation of y. (7M)
