ACTIVITY QUIZ
EDUC 602 – Inferential Statistics

Name : CHENY P. YAC Date : August 5, 2023

Course Program : ____MAVED____________________ Score:

A. Solve the given situation using the Stepwise Method.

1. A certain machine is supposed to mix peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews, and pecans in the
ratio of 5 : 4 : 3 : 1. A can containing 585 of these mixed nuts was found to have 205
peanuts, 170 hazelnuts, 125 cashews and 85 pecans.
At the .05 level of significance, test the hypothesis that the machine is mixing the nuts at
the ratio of 5 : 4 : 3 : 1.

Solving by the Stepwise Method :

I. Problem : Is the machine mixing the nuts at the ratio of 5:4:3:1?

II. Hypotheses :
Ho: The machine is mixing the nuts at the ratio of 5:4:3:1.
H1: The machine is not mixing the nuts at the ratio of 5:4:3:1

III. Level of Significance :

a= .05
df= h-1
= 4-1
=3
= 7.815

IV. Statistics :
Chi-square test, test of goodness-of-fit

Nuts Ratio Observed Expected

Peanuts 5 205 225
Hazelnuts 4 170 180
Cashews 3 125 135
Pecans 1 85 45
Total 13 585 585

= 585/13
= 45

Expected Frequencies:
45 x 5 = 225
45 x 4 = 180
45 x 3 = 135
45 x 1 = 45
X2= Ʃ (O – E)2/E
= (205 – 225)2/225 + (170 – 180)2/180 + (125 – 135)2/135 + (85 – 45)2/45
= (-20)2/225 + (-10) 2/180 + (-10) 2 /135 + (40) 2/45
=400/225 +100/180 +100/135 +1600/45
= 1.778+ 0.556+ 0.741+ 35.556
= 38. 631

V. Decision Rule : If the Chi-Square computed value is greater that the chi-square tabular value,
reject Ho

VI. Conclusion : The chi-square computed value of 38.631 is greater than the chi-square
tabular
value 0f 7.815 at .05 level of significance with 3 degrees of freedom, so the
research hypothesis is accepted which means that the machine is not mixing
the nuts in the ratio of 5:4:3:1. It implies that the machine is not in good order
because it does not mix the nuts as expected.

ACTIVITY QUIZ
EDUC 602 – Inferential Statistics

Name : Date : August 5, 2023

Course Program : ____________________________ Score:

A. Solve the given situation using the Stepwise Method.

2. Two lots of 30 experimental guinea pig were used in testing the effectiveness of a new
serum in combating a certain disease. Both were inoculated with the new organism but
only one lot was previously given the preventive serum. Is the serum effective?
Use .01 level of significance.

Solving by the Stepwise Method :

I. Problem : Is the serum effective?

II. Hypotheses :
Ho: The serum is not effective.
H1: The serum is effective.

III. Level of Significance :

a= .01
df= 1
X2 = 6.635

IV. Statistics : X2-Test of Independence

Serum No Serum Total

O E O E
Recovered 12 7 3 8 15
Died 2 7 13 8 15
Total 14 14 16 16 30
Expexted values:
14x15/30= 7
14x15/ 30= 7
16x 15/30 = 8
16x 15/30 = 8

X2= Ʃ (O – E )2/E
= (12-7) 2/7 + (2-7) 2/7 + (3-8) 2/8 + (13-8) 2/8
= 25/7 + 25/7 + 25/8 + 25/8
= 3.571 + 3.571 + 3.125 + 3.125
= 13. 392

V. Decision Rule : If the X2 computed value is greater than the X2 tabular value, reject Ho.

VI. Conclusion : The X2 computed value of 13.392 is greater than the X2 tabular value of 6.635
at .01 level of significance with one degree of freedom. This leads to the
confirmation research hypothesis that the serum is effective. This implies that
the guinea pigs that are given the serum was able to survive the disease.
