3. P1: The Values in Action Character Strengths Survey is a 240-item self-report
questionnaire with a 5-point Likert-scale format. According to the VIA Institute on
Character, something groundbreaking occurred in the social sciences in the early 2000s,
which was the discovery of a common language of 24 positive traits that comprise what
is best about our personality. These strengths are the positive aspects of your being that
influence how you think, feel, and behave, making them an important part of our lives as
nursing students. Accordingly, the website also suggests that everyone possesses all 24
character strengths to varying degrees, resulting in a truly unique profile.
4. Present Results –
5. Present Top Strengths & Weaknesses –
6. Question 1: The top strengths of the group again are: Gratitude, Spirituality, Love, and
Fairness. As a team, these inspire us to open up and advance to new horizons, new
understandings, and new knowledge within our journey as students, may it be in BEING
Skills or real life, both personally and socially. For starters, we use Love by showing it,
along with compassion towards our peers, generally through teamwork and collaboration
during activities. Since these tasks increase the engagement and socializing of each
member, we learn from everyone with every question. To add to this, since we also strive
to help each member even in tough or stressful times, love is showcased which deepens
our connection. And with deep connection, we get to know each other more, learning
more and more from different individuals both academically and socially. Further, as
these traits develop and change as days go by, we still try to remind ourselves to show
equality and fairness for each individual in every step of our journey. It is always brought
up that we should respect everyone regardless of their differences in strengths or
weaknesses, especially when it all comes down to Spirituality. Since this is always
viewed as a sensitive topic as it is inclined more to the religious side that most of us
refuse to talk about. However, Spirituality is a character that involves the recognition of a
feeling or sense that there is something greater inside of us. With this we can open up
ourselves to the world, indeed opening up to new horizons and learning that there is
something more outside the box. In line with all of these, we also use these strengths in
appreciating the efforts of each, may it be for school work or for a personal favor, not
only as a groupmate, but also as a friend. To sum this up, the team utilizes all top
strengths in different styles yet same fonts highlighting how we use them in BEING
Skills and real life where we all learn different things.
7. Question 2: Every member highlighted that their lower ranked values should be practiced
by everyone in their households, may it be in reflecting on their actions, in rethinking the
things that goes through their minds, or in being careful with the things they say.
Accordingly, a member highlighted that “you shouldn’t do unto others what you don’t
want done unto you,” saying that to practice their strengths, there should be a good
relationship among members of the family or relatives. Which includes being aware of
one’s action or words again. In line with this, while being careful goes a long way, it is
also important for the group that we should go out of our comfort zones by being more
active and more extroverted in terms of approaching multiple situations which can
improve multiple skills – like participating in social events within the neighborhood or
subdivision! Although our group acknowledges that being more interactive in
surroundings that you are unfamiliar with may be hard, a little self encouragement and
push goes a long way in growing as students. Furthermore, the ability to imagine, give
life meaning, and being graceful in your developmental environment aids self growth
which allows us to nurture ourselves. Although passing through obstacles or problems is
not something easily done by any individual, the group would like to remind everyone
that we should utilize our character strengths even in nerve wrecking and pressuring
times. As it is important to decide what’s best for you and others even in difficult times,
we should remind ourselves that we should keep calm and become a better person
throughout the journey.
8. P2: Consequently, the Character Strengths presented have their own broad virtue
categories namely, Justice, Courage, Wisdom, Temperance, Humanity, and
Transcendence. And, as shown in the picture, each of the strengths has a corresponding
virtue. Beginning with Justice which defines traits that enable you to connect in
community or social environments. Temperance which helps you moderate habits and
protect yourself from excess. Humanity refers to the strengths that appear in caring
connections with others, which are primarily interpersonal and relevant in one-on-one
relationships. Transcendence which includes abilities that allow you to connect to the
greater universe and give significance to your life. Wisdom refers to traits that aid in
learning and application of knowledge. Finally, courage refers to the strengths that allow
you to exercise your will and face adversity.
9. Conclusion: Our group took the liberty of charting our results, aligning it with the virtue
that corresponds to each strengths numbers one to three. The leading virtue is
Transcendence which generally indicates that most of our members are appreciative,
hopeful, grateful, spiritual, and has humor. This supports the idea that even though we are
all different individuals with different degrees of personality, we still all fall in the same
category that helps us connect with one another. On the other hand, the virtues placed last
are courage and temperance – the strengths that help us face adversity and moderate
habit.
In conclusion, the group has identified the strengths that each member has,
making it a point for everyone that we are all different and can still learn from one
another. Since there are 24 traits and there are 8 different results within the group, we had
to generalize the results for a simpler understanding of which is abundant among the
virtues presented – hence the chart containing the 6 categories. To reiterate, our group’s
top strengths are gratitude, spirituality, love, and fairness while the top weaknesses are
bravery, leadership, and self-regulation. This activity reminded each of us that being open
to changes and going outside of the box, the comfort zone, isn’t such a bad thing. Hence,
we should always strive to be the best version of ourselves everyday, not for other people
or to compete, but to top what we did yesterday for a brand new us in the present and
future.
