1.0 Introduction
Throughout the centuries, the companions, and followers, the Islamic scholars and the
muhaddith had collected the sayings of the Prophet or hadith in their writing and books,
such as Imam Bukhari who collected around 7563 hadith and recorded them in his
book, Sahih al-Bukhari which a part of the main group of famous hadith books or the
Kutub al-Sittah. Then, other Muslim scholars will use their book as a reference for their
books, such as Imam Nawawi who wrote his famous An-Nawawi Forty Hadith, which
has been commented on by various other scholars. This tradition of collecting 42
hadiths in a book, sometimes with commentary, on a general or a specific theme, has
been carried out by Muslim scholars until today.

This paper will study and review one the of the interesting book that follows this
tradition, that titled with “40 Hadis tentang Dakwah dan Tarbiah” by the Dr Ahmad
Sanusi Azmi.

1.1 About the Book

This book is titled “40 Hadis tentang Dakwah dan Tarbiah”, translated to “40 Hadith
about Preaching and Teaching” about written by Dr Ahmad Sanusi Azmi in Malay
language. It was published by the Ulum Hadis Research Centre that located at Bandar
Baru Nilai, Negeri Sembilan in the year of 2020 with ISBN number, 978-967-15044-7-
5. This book contains 149 pages including the cover pages.

1.2 About the Author

The author of this book, Dr. Ahmad Sanusi Azmi originated from Keramat, Kuala
Lumpur, and currently works as the Vice Deputy of the Islamic Science Institute located
at the Islamic Science University of Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan. He got his primary
education at the Lembah Keramat Primary School and his secondary education at the
Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College. Then he pursued his bachelor’s degree at the Al-
Azhar University, Egypt in the Hadith study. Then he was awarded with master’s
degree, in Quran and Sunnah study at the International Islamic University Malaysia
and proceeded to finish his studies for a doctoral degree at the University of
Birmingham, United Kingdom. He focuses on Hadith studies, Islamic history, and
orientalism, and has contributed many in article and book production, actively sharing
knowledge at seminars locally and internationally and participating in research projects
in hadith, Islamic history, and orientalism.

1.3 Contents of the book

This book starts with an introduction by the author that praises Allah al-Mighty's
blessing and grants for his book’s completion with a simple explanation of the
methodology used in writing this book and honorary mention of his colleagues that
helped him finish this book. Then the book tells the reader about the history of the
tradition of collecting 40 hadith of the Prophet PBUH among the Islamic scholars and
their purposes.

After that, this book proceeds to tell the reader the hadith which consists of 41 hadith
from various sources and status, that relates to the theme of the book, preaching
(da’wah) and teaching in Islam, with commentaries. for each hadith. Finally, the author
lists all his references used for the hadith and its commentaries that vary from ulum
hadith, Islamic history (Sirah), fiqh, and hadiths books.

2.0 Writing Methodology

2.1 The Text of the Hadith and its Chain of Narrators (Isnad)

First, the author puts a topic for each hadith mentioned for example the first hadith
topic is the necessity of preaching. Then the text of hadith and isnad is mentioned and
translated into Malay language with some characteristics that different from other
books:

a) Generally, all of text of the hadith are taken directly from its sources, but some of
it only taken in halves because to simplify writings and giving the focus to the
content of the hadith.
b) For the isnad, the author only took the top level of narrators (rawi al-a’la), and the
other narrators are left.
c) The sources of hadiths are mentioned at the translation section.
d) All hadith will be mentioned its source and its status except hadith taken from
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih al-Muslim because its already accepted (sahih).

2.2 The Author Commentary

The commentary written by the author, Dr. Ahmad Sanusi characteristics are as
follows:

a) The commentary for each of the hadith is using a simple, understandable and easy-
to-follow Malay language by the ordinary reader, without needing any guidance.
Its syntax also feels like the author is giving lectures to the reader directly.
b) He also writes the commentary by separating based on the Islamic scholar’s
commentary and explanation on the hadith, the verses from the Quran hadith that
supported the hadith text, explanation from other field of study such as fiqh, hadith,
tasawwuf, and tauhid and their respected scholars such Al-Imam ibn al-Qayyim,
al-Imam al-Haramain al-Juwaini and al-Ustaz Mustafa Masyhur that related to the
hadith. The author also comments and summarizes on the hadiths in a point that
helps the reader follows the narration perfectly.

2.3 The Sources of the Book

The author uses 26 books as his sources to write this book that is varies from all
Islamic sciences and studies that greatly helps the reader to understand to context of
the hadith from all aspects of Islam. These various sources are:

a) Quran Study such as Tafsir books such as Wasit fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Majid book by
Abu al-Hassan Ali Ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi al-Nisaburi and Zād al-masīr fī ‘ilm al-Tafsīr
book by Abū al-Farj ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAlī or Ibn al-Jawzi.
b) Hadith Study books such as al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī by Al-Buk̲h̲ārī and Sunan al-Nasā’ī al-
Kubrā by Al-Nasā’ī.
c) Islamic history books such as al-Sīra al-Nabawiyya by Ibn Hisham and al-Sīra al-
Nabawiyya wa Akhbār al-Khulafā’ by Ibn Ḥibbān
d) Hadith commentary books such as Al-Jāmiʿ Li Syuʿab al-Imān by Ahmad ibn al-Husayn,
Jami ‘Ulum wa al- Hikam fi Sharh Khamsin Hadisan Min Jawami’ al-Kalim by Abd al-
Rahman ibn Syihab al-Din and 40 Hadis Tentang Wabak Penyakit by the author himself.

3.0 Commentaries and Conclusion

In my opinion, 40 Hadis mengenai Dakwah dan Tarbiah book by Dr. Ahmad Sanusi
Azmi is an amazing read because of several reasons:

a) The author himself is an expert in the hadith study, which he had focuses on
focuses on Hadith studies, Islamic history, and orientalism, and has contributed
many in article and book production, actively sharing knowledge at seminars locally
and internationally and participating in research projects in hadith, Islamic history,
and orientalism.
b) The writings in this book using a clear and easy to understand in Malay language,
using a simple sentence syntax that help the reader get a clear understanding
about the hadith for all level of readers.
c) The focus on the hadith itself help the book to be simple and easy to read, keeping
the reader focus and interested when reading the book.
d) The commentary covers all aspect in Islam by collecting Islamic scholars’ views
and commentaries related to the hadith and supporting it with verses form the
Quran and the Sunnah, that helps enforce the understanding the hadith and Islam
as whole.

However, I have some recommendation in improving this book in the next edition such
as using coloured font differentiating the text of the hadith and the translation. Then,
it also great to add some visual graphics into the book that will further improving the
readers understanding about the hadith alongside keeping their interest and focus
when reading this great book.

In conclusion, the 40 Hadis tentang Dakwah dan Tarbiah is a great book, achieving its
goals by improving the reader knowledge and understanding about preaching(da’wah)
and teaching(tarbiah) concepts in Islam through the Hadith of the Prophet PBUH, with
its unique charaterictics. It is a great recommendation who wants to know more about
Islam, regardless muslim and non-muslim, and their level of understanding in Islam.
Finally, the Dr. Ahmad Sanusi effort in writing this book, definitely helps in improving
the life of the Muslim individuals, their family, society and the Ummah as whole.
