Differences between Risks, Dangers, Incidents, Work Accidents and Occupational

Diseases

In the work environment, it is essential to understand and know how to differentiate

the different meanings that are related to occupational health and safety. Here is

an explanation of the differences between risks, hazards, incidents, work accidents

and occupational diseases, there is a big difference since the hazard is a situation

or an act that has the potential to cause damage to people, property, the

environment or overall health. It can be a physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic,

psychosocial or other characteristic that presents a risk, such as excessive stress,

a lot of noise, etc.; Risk refers to the probability of something unwanted happening

(such as an accident or disease) along with the magnitude of harm that could result

from that event. It involves the combination of the possibility of a hazard occurring

and the consequences that could result from it. Risks are assessed in order to take

preventive measures and mitigate their impact. An incident is an unwanted or

unexpected event that has the potential to cause harm, but does not necessarily

result in actual damage or injury. Incidents can serve as early warnings to identify

and address hazards and risks before they become accidents. As a spill of liquid

on the floor is an incident if it does not cause any injury, but it represents a danger

that could lead to an accident, and as it happens very often, a work accident is an

undesired event that occurs while the worker is performing his work that clearly

could be serious or minor but in one way or another affects the worker and his
material damages; On the other hand, an occupational disease is an adverse

health condition that results from exposure to risk factors present in the work

environment, as well as other factors such as stress, and psychological diseases

that develop over time and can become have detrimental effects on the health of

workers. Based on the above, we can conclude that it is very important that

workers know how to distinguish the different meanings and know the differences

that exist, since it is crucial to guarantee a safe and healthy work environment.

Know how to identify and evaluate them in order to mitigate the risks and dangers

that exist in the work environment to guarantee a safe and healthy space, helping

to reduce the probability of accidents and occupational diseases, protecting the

health and well-being of workers.
