Lesson
Summary:
The purpose of this lesson is to build skills on story telling abilities and being able to recall past events.
Children will listen to the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle and discuss events in the
story. The children will then get a refresher lesson on the book and attempt to recall what they
remember happening in the story. As a class we will make a list of what we think caterpillars eat, and
finally get to integrate technology by using a Hatch Screen to show the group of children footage
caterpillars in their natural environment.

Estimated This lesson will take about 100 minutes. I plan on dividing the lesson into 3 days, the first day will
Duration:
consist of 30 minutes reading and discussing the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. The second day
the children will use 30 minutes to discuss and retell events that happened in the story. I will then ask
children if they can remember any of the foods the caterpillar ate along with what they thought
caterpillars ate. The last 40 minutes we will be using the Hatch screen where the children will observe
videos of caterpillars in their natural environment and see what they eat.

Preparation of I will need the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” for the first day along with books on caterpillar’s environment
materials and to place around the classroom. Before reading the book, I will ask the children what they know about caterpillars.
environment For the second day I will need a big sheet of paper and a marker to write down the options for food.
The learning environment will be set up with caterpillar provocations to boost the children’s engagement. They’ll
be able to explore different books so they’re able to wonder and develop an interest.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: Introductory activity 30 minutes- With the class, the teacher will read the book “The
Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Throughout the reading the children will be asked, what do you think is going to
happen next, and where is the caterpillar going. After reading the book, the teacher will ask the children to recall any
information about events that took place in the book. They will be asked what food the caterpillar ate in this book. The
teacher should go back in the book and show the children images of what was being eaten as well as images of the
recalled events.

Day 2 :30 minutes-The day after reading the book, the children will gather on the carpet to discuss events in the book
they could recall. The teacher will inform the students that there is a piece of paper and marker for her to write down
what the very hungry caterpillar ate in the book. The teacher will then ask “are there any food that you don’t see that
you believe caterpillars eat. After recording the information, the teacher will read it back to them and hang it up in their
classroom to see what everyone voted for.

Day 3: 40 minutes On the third and final day the children will be able to integrate technology into the learning process
by using a hatch. Hatch is an interactive display that allows children to see what is being searched on the screen. Before
watching Hatch. The teacher will discuss what the caterpillar has eaten in the book and go over the things they see
rabbits’ ear. After a class discussion, the children will be brought into another room where a hatch is, and they will
watch videos on what Rabbits look like while eating and what they do in the natural environment.

Extension
Teacher Vision is a website for families to take home where students can record different elements in a story and use
printable to map out events in a story.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the
needs of gifted or accelerated students:
Instruction could be differentiated or challenged by having the children draw what they see in the video while watching
it. This activity could also include going to the playground and collect bugs.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:

Vocabulary: Cocoon, Chrysalis, Transformation, Metamorphosis

For teachers I will need Ohio’s Learning and Development Standards to help assess and reflect on the knowledge
and skills fundamental to children’s learning of language, reading and writing. I will also need access
to a Hatch Interactive display, paper and marker. A long with books on caterpillars.
For students Books on Caterpillars, Hatch to watch videos.
