Lesson I am going to let students read lots of books on different animals in the ocean (even if it is
Summary: just looking a pictures). I am going to read a book called “Sea Creatures” (First Explorers)
to my class. After doing this I am then going to pull up real life pictures of the animals
online and discuss the animals mentioned in the book with my students. I am then going to
have them get on iPads and play a Kahoot game, go over flashcards using Quizlet and also
create a KWL chart using the SMART board. They are also going to be able to draw and
color their own sea creature.
Estimated This is going to be two days long. Each day we are going to spend 50 minutes on the topic.
Duration:
Preparation What preparation is needed?
of materials I will need to create the kahoot, Quizlet and a KWL chart beforehand for my students. I will
and also need to make sure I have lots of books about the animals in the ocean and also the
environment book that I am going to read to the class.

What materials will be used?

-Books
-Ipads
-Smart Board

How will the learning environment be set up?

I am going to have a few books at each table for them to do silent reading on their own.
After this I am going to have them all move onto the carpet so they are all able to be
together for the story and the other activities we do. This will make the environment more
relaxed and the students will be able to hear each other easier as we discuss the topic.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
The first 15 minutes I am going to have all of the students on the carpet and I am going to pull up a KWL
chart on the SMART board. I am going to have all of the students tell me the things they know about sea
animals and write them under the “K” spot on the SMART board. Then I am going to go around and ask all
of the students about the things they want to know about sea animals and write that under the “W” spot
on the chart. I am then going to take the next 20 minutes to send the students back to their desks to start
reading books/ looking at the pictures of books that are non-fiction about different sea animals. After they
have done this I am going to spend the next 10 minutes having the students come back to the carpet and
read a book with them titled “Sea Creatures”. We are also going to look up photos of all the different
animals mentioned in the story. We are then going to take the last 5 minutes to break down the book as a
class and discuss some of our favorite things and go over any questions the students have about any of the
animals discussed.

Day 2:

The first 10 minutes we are going to review all the things we learned about sea animals the day before.
We are then going to pull up the KWL chart again and begin to fill in all the “L” spot on the chart with all
the things we learned the day before. After we have completed the chart on the SMART board I am then
going to take the next 10 minutes to have the students get on Kahoot using their iPads and we are going to
match the name of the animal with a picture of the animal. This will help students connect the words with
the animals. I am then going to take the next 10 minutes to play a “what am I?” game on Quizlet using the
flashcards. There will be clues on the front of the card and the the animal it is listed on the back. We will
have this pulled up on the SMART board to work together as a class. I will then take 10 minutes for the
students to go back to their desks and draw a picture of their favorite sea animal on notability on their
iPads. They will then be able to take the last 5 minutes to share their drawings with all of the other
students and share why they like that animal/ why it is their favorite.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered)
to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: For students who are gifted I could let them use
Glogster and make one about their favorite animal. This allows them to look up photos of the animals on
their own and then write a few of their own sentences about the animals. They then are able to go more
in depth about the animals and share the new information with the class.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: For students who are struggling to understand I could sit with them one on one and look at
pictures of these animals and talk them through the characteristics of what makes that animal the animal
it is. I can also write the animal names with the student to help them spell and sound it out with them.
