DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE 2022-2023

GRADE :7 CHEMISTRY
DURATION: -11April to 17 April 2022
Prepared by: - PRABHA THOMAS
PERIOD -1
TOPIC- ACIDS
LOB- To identify some common acids.

Acid, any substance that in water solution tastes sour, changes the color of
certain indicators (e.g., reddens blue litmus paper), reacts with some metals
(e.g., iron) to liberate hydrogen, reacts with bases to form salts, and promotes
certain chemical reactions.
There are two basic types of acids organic and inorganic acids.
Inorganic acids are sometimes referred to as mineral acids. As a group,
organic acids are generally not as strong as inorganic acids. The main
difference between the two is the presence of carbon in the compound.
Inorganic acids do not contain carbon.

Acidic substances are usually identified by their sour taste.

The term acid comes from the Latin root word ‘acere’ which means sour.
Organic acid and their sources.
1. Acetic acid – Vinegar
2. Formic acid – Ant’s sting
3. Citric acid – oranges, lemons
4. Lactic acid- Curd

Inorganic acids or Mineral acids

1.Sulphuric acid
2.Nitric acid
3.Hydrochloric acid

Learning outcome - To identify some common acids.

PERIOD-2
TOPIC- Properties of acids
LOB- To summarize the properties of acids.
• Acids have a sour taste.
• All acids are soluble in water.
• Acid’s solutions turn blue litmus paper red.
• Acid solutions have a pH value < 7.
• Most acid solutions are CORROSIVE.
• All dilute acids conduct electricity due to the presence of mobile ions in
solution.

Learning outcome - To summarize the properties of acids.
