Tutorial N°=01

Exercise 1:
We gather 20 students in a room having the follwoing dimensions: 10m *7m * 2.5m. Each person
presents an volume of 0.07 m3 and exchange with the ambient environment a quantity of heat
Q  100 kJ / h . Initially, the air is at T0=273K and P0= 1atm. The air is assimilated to an ideal gas and
the room is isolated.

1) Calculate the variation in ambient air temperature contained in the room during 15 min.

Exercise 2:
One mole of an ideal gas passes reversibly from state A(P0, 8V0, T0) to state B(32 P0,V0,T1) by three
different paths:

a) A->B: adiabatic process

b) A->B: pressure varies linearly with volume

c) A->B: isochoric trans. then isobaric trans.

1) Draw the three transformations in the PV diagram

2) Calculate the work provided during each step; W=f(P0,V0). Give the numerical value.

* P0= 105 Pa, V0= 3l, Cv=1.5R

Exercise 3:
Considering a cylinder- piston system. The piston mass is neglected while its area is S = 100 cm ². The
piston moves without friction. The position of the piston, l, is marked on a perpendicular axis with d=0
represents the base of the cylinder. In the initial state d=d0=20cm. The gas enclosed within the cylinder
is considered as ideal gas.

I) The cylinder walls are not insulated allowing then heat transfer. The cylinder is placed in
thermostat-system maintaining a constant temperature T0=373K. The piston's pressure outside the
cylinder is increased from P0= 105 Pa to Pf= 2 P0.

1) The transformation is carried out very slowly.

a) calculate the new piston position for the final state.

b) calculate the work ,W, received by the gas

c) calculate the amount of heat Qg received by the gas and its entropy variation

d) calculate the amount of heat Qt received by the thermostat and its entropy variation

1
e) calculate ΔStot= ΔSg+ ΔSt

2) The cylinder remains in thermal contact with the thermostat, the P0 value is now brutally changed to
the Pf value.

a) calculate the new position, the, of the piston in the final state once the equilibrium is established.

b) calculate the work received by the gas

c) calculate the amount of heat Q'g received by the gas and its entropy variation

d) calculate the amount of heat Q’t received by the thermostat and its entropy variation

e) calculate ΔStot= ΔSg+ ΔSt

II) There is no contact with the thermostat. However, the cylinder walls and piston are insulated to
prevent heat exchange with the outside environment. From a P0 initial state to a Pf state.

1) as in section I-1, the transformation is reversible. Calculate d1.

1) as in section I-2, the transformation is brutal. Calculate d2 at equilibrium
