What is a RAW File
What is a Raw File

A RAW file is unedited RAW data captured by

your camera’s sensor.

It is the most equivalent to 35mm film in the

digital world.

The “Digital Negative”

RAW VS JPEG
JPEG

Every camera has processes they run on their

JPEG files. The files are filtered and become
compressed data:

1. Color correction
2. Noise Reduction & Sharpening
3. Exposure & Contrast Correction
4. Saturation Adjustment
5. White Balance
RAW

Unedited RAW data, you get what the sensor

sees without the Jpeg compression, however
you must do some form of:

1. Color correction
2. Noise Reduction & Sharpening
3. Exposure & Contrast Correction
4. Saturation Adjustment
5. White Balance
Why shoot and edit in RAW?
The endless possibilities of the RAW data.

You can push them farther and get more out of

them without breaking them.

JPEG 12
There is a place for JPEG

Primarily for saving for web and print.

Possibly for Event photographers who have to

edit 250+ images per session. (debatable)
Types of Raw Files
RAW Files have a unique suffix based on the
camera they are from:
Camera Raw File and Suffix
Canon
DSCF001.CR2
Sony
DSCF001.ARW
Nikon
DSCF001.NEF
Olympus
DSCF001.ORF
Adobe
DSCF001.DNG

***These are just a few, there are thousands and each camera has
its own profile within the suffix
Regardless of their suffix, they all need some
type of RAW processing.

“Digital Negative” needs “Digital Darkroom”

The “Positive” in this analogy is a Jpeg, Tiff, or

PSD
