Travel Sewing Kit

The Travel Sewing Kit is handy for quick repairs when
travelling, or for crafting on the go! Featuring room to
safely store pins, needles, safety pins, buttons, scissors,
and more! Despite its petite size, it can hold all the
essentials. The outside of the kit is constructed with
strips of your favourite patchwork fabric, making it a
fun scrap buster project. The interior includes felt
panels to safely stow your sewing items. There is
opportunity to customise your pouch with fabrics and
trims. The kit cleverly folds into a triangle shape and is
secured with press snaps or sew in studs.
This is a quick project that can be used as a travel
sewing kit, an earbud holder, coin pouch, USB holder
or jewellery holder. The Travel Sewing Kit would be the
perfect gift for a traveller or friend who loves to sew.
These little Travel Sewing Kits are so much fun to make
– be warned you won’t be able to stop at one! .

M aterials:
Assorted Cotton Prints:
 Three assorted fabric strips, measuring 1 ½ x 9
inches (patchwork exterior)
 Cotton fabric measuring 9 x 4 inches (lining)
 Small scraps for decoration

Wool Felt
 Measuring 7 x 4 inches
 Small scraps for decoration

Fusible Interfacing (lightweight)

Fusible Web
Snaps (2 sets) (alternatively use sew in press studs,
buttons, or velcro for the closure)

Note on Fabric Selection: The fabric used in this

project is Lemon Tree fabric range by Tilda. I would
recommend choosing a variety of small scale floral
prints to make this project shine.

F inished size:
When closed, each side of the triangle kit measures
3 ½ inches.
When open, the kit measures 3 x 7 ½ inches.

Note: Please read all instructions before

commencing the project. Careful and accurate
cutting and sewing are essential to ensure success
with this project. It is recommended that fabrics be
100% cotton and well ironed. Requirements are
based on fabric 112cm (44in) wide.

Preparation and cutting
1. Print the templates onto printer paper and cut
around the outside border of each template. You
will need to cut – travel sewing kit template; felt
template; fabric decoration template; and felt
decoration template.
2. Pin the travel sewing kit template to the lining
fabric and cut out around the outside line. Mark
the snap placement on the lining with a water
soluble pen or tailors chalk/pencil.
3. Sew the three fabric strips together, to form a
piece measuring 9 x 3 ½ inches. Press seams in
one direction. Cut out the patchwork exterior
using the travel sewing kit template.
4. Pin the felt template to the wool felt and cut out
around the outline.

8. Place the patchwork exterior of the kit, face up
on a table. Position the lining on top of the
patchwork exterior, ensuring all edges are
aligned and the right sides are facing. Pin. Sew
around the outside of the kit, leaving a 2 inch
gap in one long side for turning. Clip corners and
curves. Turn the kit out the right way through
the gap in the lining. Use a chopstick or turning
tool to turn it out fully. Press. Topstitch around
the outside of the kit approximately 1/8 inch
from the edge, enclosing the gap in the lining as
you go. Press.
9. On the kit, mark the placement of the creases,
referring to the template. Fold the kit on the
dotted lines, and press.
10. Stitch the felt panel to the centre fold, so the
dotted line on the felt matches up with the
dotted line on the kit. Stitch twice to secure.

11. Pin the felt decoration to the middle of the
fabric decoration panels. Stitch in place. Fuse
the fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric
decoration following manufacturer’s directions.
Remove the paper backing, and fuse the
decorative piece to the kit, where shown in the
photos, taking care to keep the area around the
snap free.
12. Install the snaps on the two inside sections of
the kit, where marked on the template with a
cross. The male part of the snap, will be facing
upwards on the patchwork exterior. When they
are in position, fold the triangle pouch to the
closed position, to check the placement of the
outer snaps. On the two outer sections of the
pouch, install the female part of the snap so that
it is facing upwards on the interior of the pouch.
You will need to move the felt panel out of the
way whilst installing the snap.
13. Lastly fill the felt panel with pins and needles.
On the two outer decorative areas, you can add
buttons and safety pins. Mini scissors will fit
inside the pouch. Look for scissors with a small
blade (approx. 1 inch).
