Computer Systems

As you might have noticed already, everything in Information Technology revolves around the
computer
system and as such it would make sense we define a computer system.
A computer system is an electronic device that accepts instructions from the user, acts on these
instructions
and then provides a useful result.
The different parts of a computer system can be classified into two major groups:
1. Hardware: These are the physical components of the computer system that you can see
and/or
touch. Example: keyboard, mother board, display screen.
2. Software: These are a set of instructions to the computer system telling it what to do and how
to
do it. Note: A software is also called a program (they are used interchangeably). Example:
Microsoft word, Google Chrome, Call of Duty.

Computer systems can be classified as general – purpose or special – purpose based on the
extent of its
capabilities.
A general-purpose computer consists of hardware and software suitable for undertaking a wide
range of tasks
while a special-purpose computer is one which performs a small range of tasks and contains
features uniquely
designed for use in a particular industry or application.
