to show the similarities.

ethically, searching only for what was asked for in the lesson.

Differentiation Strategies for ELL learner: The teacher will spend a few minutes with the
Strategies ELL learner prior to the lesson in order to help build vocabulary. The teacher
will activate prior learning when the pumpkin activities completed on Pumpkin
Day and use some Spanish words to help her connect the vocabulary (plant,
animal, offspring, species, leaves, seeds)
Strategies for vision impaired learners: Activities will be shown on the large
Interactive Board, preferential seating, individual activities on iPads (Epic and
Seesaw).
Strategies for learner with IEP: Extra time will given if needed and the
drawing to scaffold for the Seesaw activity will be completed with a partner.
Strategies for acceleration: Learners who complete the activity early will be
challenged to find a nonfiction book about an animal and will be asked to
identify characteristics of an animal and its offspring that show similarities.

Engageme Ask the learners to recall activities we did using pumpkins on Pumpkin Day. Show the pumpkin life
nt cycle digital poster on the interactive board. The teacher will then play a song on the Interactive
Board at the front of the room to activate prior knowledge about the pumpkin life cycle.
Give clear objectives and connect the life cycle to the objectives for this lesson. Tell the learners
that we will use what we know from the pumpkin life cycle to look at details and discover more
about the fully grown adult pumpkin and the baby plant. Review comprehension strategy “compare
and contrast.” Ask the learners which part showed the adult pumpkin and which showed a part
that is the baby plant or “offspring” and would grow into a new pumpkin plant.
Play the song again, ask the learners to sing, and pay close attention to the similarities and
differences of the plant at its different stages.

Engageme Formative Assessment: Learners will be able to show they recall the stages of a pumpkin life cycle
nt through answering questions. Learners will show a beginning understanding of comparing an adult
Assessme pumpkin plant and its offspring. The teacher will gauge understanding and use follow-up questions
nt or statements to further gauge and guide understanding.

Exploration Explain that the learners will find a nonfiction book about a plant on Epic. Remind learners that we
have a privilege to use these digital resources and it is our responsibility to use them correctly and
in a kind way. We are not going to change the icons on each other’s Epic accounts and we are not

going to search for or read books that are not about plants. When the learners find a book, they
will listen to or read the book twice. The second time they will look carefully for similarities and
differences between the adult plant and its offspring. This information will then be used to draw a
picture of the adult plant and the offspring. Learners will label similiarities. This activity will be
completed in pairs (chosen by the teacher).

Exploration Learners will show an understanding of the term “offspring” as well as an understanding of how to

Explanatio The teacher will use the interactive board to show GoogleSlides of the vocabulary and concepts
n needed for this lesson: compare, contrast, adult, offspring, characteristics, traits. The teacher will
show pictures for each vocabulary word in order to help make conncetions and explain the
vocabulary words using the pumpkin life cycle slide. Guide the learners through making
connections between adult or parent plant and its offspring by comparing and identifying
similarities. The teacher will guide the learners through discussing the similarities of trees and their
offspring, such as how the leaves are similar shape, though they may be a different size. The
teacher will guide the learners through matching pictures of plants and their offspring by identifying
similarities.

and contrasting the plant using a book on Epic. This will be recorded on the t-chart Seesaw
activity in their activity list. Learners will use the record tool to record themselves telling about the
similarities and differences of the plant they learned about.

Extension: Learners can apply what they learned about comparing and contrasting plant adults
and offspring to show similarities and differences and connect this concept to animals. Learners
will match animal parents and offsprings in this Seesaw activity:

Evaluation When Seesaw activities are completed, the learners will turn them in and they will be assessed on
the teacher’s Seesaw interface before activities are approved for parents to see. If students did
not show understanding, they will meet with the teacher at the small group table to read the book
the learners chose and discuss the similiarities of the adult and offspring plant together.
