Lesson Name: Plant Parts

Strand: Organisms and Environments

Science Topic: Structure and Function

Basic Lesson Components

Grade Level: 1st

Time Estimate: 45 minutes

Science Content:
Organisms have structures and processes to help them survive in their environments. Plants
are one of these organisms and by identifying the different parts of the plants you can begin to
understand these different processes and structures necessary for survival.

TEKS:
1.10(B) identify and compare the parts of plants

Content Objective(s):
The student will be able to identify the parts of the plant.

ELPS:
Listening
2.C Learn new language structures, expressions, and basic and academic vocabulary heard
during the classroom instruction and interactions.
Speaking
3.D Speak using grade-level content area vocabulary in context to internalize new English
words and build academic language proficiency.

introduce the lesson in a visual
way to grasp and maintain their
focus. I will explain that we will
be focusing on the parts of a plant
and their roles. I will use the video
to go more into depth and provide
a visual aid. Students will then be
able to gather an understanding of
the topic at hand.

have four columns titled flower,
leaves, roots, and stem. On the
side of the chart will be clip art
pictures of different parts of the
plant. I will explain what each
column says and put them in
breakout groups. In their breakout
rooms, they will organize the clip
art pictures into the different
columns. They will discuss with
their classmates where they think
it may belong. I will use images
that have very clear parts, like a

part as the teacher goes over it.
Students will also drag the
description of each part of the
plant to the corresponding box.
The completed graphic organizer
will have a picture of the plant

think is being described in the
riddle. This will give them an
opportunity to show their
understanding of the lesson while
completing an engaging activity.

Evaluate I will be giving the students a five Writing questions and Flowers, roots,

blank with some picture support.
This quiz will help me see who all
grasped the information we
presented today in the prior
categories.
