This book here on the table is very important because it helped me learn good
things - it is called 'The Book of Life'. I don't like that book there on the desk

have a strong interest in the pedagogy of engineering. What do
you believe are the best opportunities to improve how the discipline is
taught?

I find it interesting to think about this in the context of how education has evolved. A
long time ago, there was the Socratic method with a teacher and a few students.
With the democratization of education, we had to scale up and become more
efficient, so we came up with the notion of the classroom, with one teacher, many
students and parallel content delivery. I’m dating myself here, but along came
videotapes and people thought, if a lecture is on videotape, you just don't have to go
to class anymore. That didn't quite happen. Now you have Coursera and EdX and so
on – on any topic you pick, there is a beautiful lecture available on the web.

So the idea of using the classroom purely for content-delivery is dead, if all you are
doing is giving a lecture that's perhaps available in a better form elsewhere. So, the
question is what does a classroom experience bring that's beyond just content
delivery? How do you leverage the classroom to get the maximum bang for the buck?
People have tried many things, including flipped classrooms [a blended-learning
model in which student devote in-class time to live problem solving and watch
lectures online outside of class]. In any case, I'd say reinventing the classroom is an
experiment in progress.
A second big challenge, especially in engineering, is making learning an interactive,
collaborative experience, including hands-on activities. You can talk about data and
artificial intelligence all you want, but in the end, engineers build things. They fix
things. So how do you bring the hands-on experience into the curriculum early? How
do you make sure students understand what happens when people work together in
teams? Another challenge is the boundary condition of time. If a degree program is
four years long, what do you change in order to fit these new things in?

ENGINEERING DESIGN THINKING

Engineering design thinking is a topic of interest to STEM science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics] practitioners and researchers alike. Engineering
design thinking is “a complex cognitive process” including divergence - convergence,
a systems perspective, ambiguity, and collaboration. Design is often complex,

Mystery of the Red Truck

It has been confirmed that late on the night of the sixth of July, a large red truck ran
into the bakery on Maryland Street. After an initial investigation by police, it is now
clear that the truck had no driver at all. The locals are asking a simple question:
“Where was the driver?” If the police want to solve this mystery, they will need the
CCTV footage from the street. One of the locals said: “We’re all quite worried about a
truck with no driver. This truck has never been seen in the neighbourhood before. If
we’d seen that truck before, we’d solve this mystery by now.” Many locals share the
same concerns. They want to know what’s happening in their town.
A witness at the crime scene told police: “There was a loud noise coming from the
truck while it was going towards the building and its speed... It was unbelievable. If it

SPACE ELEVATORS: preparing for takeoff

ln his 1979 novel, The Fountains of Paradise, Arthur C Clarke wrote about an elevator
connecting the earth's surface to space. Three decades later, this science fiction
concept is preparing to take off in the real world. NASA has launched the Space
Elevator Challenge, a competition with a generous prize fund, and several teams and
companies are working on serious research projects aimed at winning it.
As its name suggests, a space elevator is designed to raise things into space.
Satellites components or space ships, supplies for astronauts in space stations, and
even astronauts themselves are examples of payloads that could be transported
into orbit without the need for expIosive and environmentaIly unfriendly rockets.
However the altitude of orbital space - a colossal 3 5,790 km above the earth - is a
measure of the challenge facing engineers. How could such a height be reached?
The answer is by using an incredibly strong and lightweight cable, strong enough to
support its own weight and a heavy |oad. The design of such a cab|e is still largely
theoretical. This would be attached to a base station on earth at one end and a
satellite in geostationary orbit (fixed above a point on the equator) at the other. Lift
vehicles would then ascend and descend the cable, powered by electromagnetiÍc
force and controlled remotely.

Telecommunications – more than just TV and telephones

TVs and smartphones are getting smarter – but fridges and washing machines now
include computers and are Internet-ready. Many of us are used to getting an email or
a text message saying ‘Please pick up some milk on the way home’. Soon, that
message may not come from a friend, roommate, or spouse, but from the fridge. How
does the ‘Internet-ready’ fridge work?
Products in the smart fridge have radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. These
are small computer chips that store information, for example ‘This is a two-litre
carton of milk. It was manufactured on 22 September’. With a built-in RFID reader,
the fridge knows what’s inside it at all times. You can set the fridge to send you an
alert when there’s only one carton of milk left. The smart fridge can also be
programmed to keep a list of products that you need, and place an order with the
supermarket for delivery when certain products are about to run out. An app on your
smartphone allows you to check the contents of your fridge from anywhere.
The smart fridge also communicates with the electrical power company. Some
companies charge different rates for power at different times of day. The fridge
receives signals from the power company when electricity rates are higher, and
switches to a low energy mode for brief periods.
It’s easy to see the benefits of an Internet-ready fridge, but what about an
Internet-ready washing machine? Korean appliance maker LG already produces one.
If there’s a problem with the machine, it sends you a message with a full explanation.
If you need to deal with particular stains in clothing, you can download a special
wash cycle to solve the problem. The product line also includes an oven that can
download recipes and cooking instructions, and will send you a message when a meal
is cooked and is ready to be taken out of the oven.
