Please provide comments in regards to the student teacher's strengths and areas for improvement.

I observed Ms. Kirkpatrick on Oct. 4th, 2023. She taught a wonderful lesson about the American Revolution to 5th grade students.

The strengths of the lesson included:

-Effective structures for collaboration among students. They were given think time, an opportunity to share and discuss with a partner,
and a chance to participate in the class discussion.
-She used preplanned, high level questions. These were already written in her slide presentation.
-Great opportunities for inquiry. She used an Image Flood to introduce the new unit. Students wrote what they saw, what it made them
think, and what they wondered. This got them thinking about the upcoming SS unit and made them very curious.
-Students were engaged the entire lesson. They were invested in sharing with their partners and with the whole group. They shared
great ideas that sparked ideas for other students.
-The lesson plan is thorough and the slideshow guided the lesson. It was aligned well to the learning target and curriculum.
-Since we are an AVID Elementary School, it was great to see AVID strategies embedded. These included the graphic organizer, call
and response, inquiry and collaboration (as mentioned above), and use of the AVID binders for organizing their notes.

Overall, her cooperating teacher (Mrs. Downs) informed me that Ms. Kirkpatrick comes to school very prepared, works hard to be
thorough, studies the curriculum, and has made great improvements through her tremendous effort. All of this hard work paid off as I
observed an effective Tier 1 lesson. She knows all the students' names and has clearly built a positive rapport with each of them.
They responded to her prompts and encouragement. They laughed together and they showed a lot of enthusiasm for the new SS unit.
