ften when discussing abortion, marginal situations such as rape come up. However, I think
O
this is not where the main focus of the discussion should be. The most important thing is to
know what is the fetus whose death the abortion aims at.
On scientific grounds, we can say that the fetus is a living human individual, but
science does not answer the question: what does it mean to be a human being. This is a
question to which we as a society have not given an answer. We have been lost for a long
time: we don't know where we are from, what we are, and why we are. Many consider
themselves animals because they do not believe in God or a divine nature that separates us
from intelligent apes. This has led to a situation where many people see their own lives and
the lives of others as worthless in themselves. Death has become the purpose, or
destination, of our life, because it is seen as the final end for us. Life has become only as
valuable as it is useful and how much happiness is in it. The social discussion about
euthanasia also shows that the question is no longer so much about who is a human, but
whose life is worth living.
We know that the goal of life is not death, but eternal life. We were created so that we
could learn to know, love, and serve God in this life in order to share in His eternal happiness
in heaven. We show love to God when we follow His commandments (John 14:15), the most
famous of which is: "Love God above all things and your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:12).
If we do as the Bible says and love others as ourselves, we want the best for them. What
better could we hope for than, the best: eternal life and happiness in communion with God?
In Finland, many women have had an abortion. Many fathers have lost their children, and
many have lost a sister or a brother in abortion. The topic touches a lot of people on a
personal level. We know too that abortion is a really serious act, a mortal sin.
It would be cruel to tell people that they have killed an innocent child, but leave them
unaware of the danger this act has put them in. When discussing this topic we must not
leave out the hope either: repentance, grace, and love. It would be extremely heartless to
leave people ignorant of such a great gift as the possibility of salvation; to leave them in the
darkness without hope of change for the better, to leave them in the emptiness without love.
The British Journal of Psychiatry journal’s meta-analysis shows that abortion can
have a huge negative effect on the mental health of the mother1. The study estimates that
women who have had an abortion have an 81% increased risk of mental health problems
and that about 10% of women's mental health problems are due to abortion. Also, the
studies from the USA2 and Canada3 show similar results considering the effect abortions can
have on women's mental health.
If we don’t share the gospel, good news, while talking about something as horrible as
abortion, I think, it would be like saying to those who have committed it: “Goodbye to hell!”.
The Bible says that we have a duty to warn sinners. If we don't, we will be held responsible.
(Ezek. 33).
The biggest problem in today's society is not abortion, but Godlessness. We have
abandoned God, and therefore we don’t have the truth: we don't know what really separates
a human from an inhumane animal who acts according to its instincts and isn’t held
responsible for its actions. We don’t know, why we should not act according to the laws of
the jungle, where the strong wins over the weak.
odlessness is the beginning and the root of all our problems, which must be
G
addressed if we want to get rid of the problems fundamentally and thoroughly. It is not
possible to build a functioning and just society if it is not built on truth. It is not possible to
build it without God: "If the Lord does not build the house, then its builders labor in vain." (Ps.
127:1). If the premises are based on a lie, with what probability is the result functional and
correct? And, if for some reason it happens to be the correct outcome, how long will it stay
that way? How long does it take for someone to redo the calculation and find that the result
does not match the starting values? Everything is fundamentally about God because God is
the Origin of all things. Without, God, the Truth, we have no right and wrong and the highest
authority would be us, the humans.
bortion is not only a matter of material things, but the spiritual world is also strongly
A
connected to it. It would not be far-fetched to say that abortion is the ultimate form of idolatry
in our time. It is a modern human sacrifice on the altars of modern idols: success, money,
and respect. How the devil must rejoice over every little child who dies in an abortion! In
abortion, the lord of lies, evil, and this world is worshipped. We can't beat him with our
intelligence or our own strength. Only God can win him and has already won when He died
on the Holy Tree, but the battle for souls is still going on.
Therefore, when we talk about abortion it is extremely important to share the grace
that is available. It is important not to forget hope, love, and truth. If we want to stop the
homicide of unborn babies, it is important that people come to know the Truth; to know God,
who is Love. In addition, we need the sacraments to convey grace, to strengthen us, so that
when the real situation comes, we will not rely on ourselves but will find our strength in God.
Let's not leave God out of this matter of abortion, because we cannot win the battle against
the devil, the Lord of darkness and lies, without the True Light and Truth.
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness..." - Matt. 6:33
