Giraffes, members of the Giraffidae family and the Giraffa genus, are distinctive
herbivorous mammals renowned for their towering necks and striking spotted coat
patterns. These graceful creatures are native to the open woodlands and savannas of
Africa, where they navigate their environments with a unique elegance.
The most conspicuous feature of giraffes is their long neck, which can reach
incredible lengths, allowing them to reach high branches and foliage that are
inaccessible to other herbivores. Despite their considerable height, giraffes have
the same number of neck vertebrae as most mammals; their elongated necks result
from the lengthening of these individual vertebrae. Their prehensile tongues, often
extending up to 18 inches, enable them to grasp and strip leaves from trees with
precision.
