Ken Jeong, Sonoya Mizuno, Chris Pang, Jimmy, Ronny Chieng, Remy Hii, Nico Santos Jing
Lusi, Manhattan, Carmen Soo
Director: Jon Chu

2018`s romantic comedy directed by Jon Chu was nominated 62 times and won 12
nominees. ("Crazy Rich Asians") But the success of this movie was guaranteed even before
the movie hasn’t realized. The rom-com is based on Kevin Kwan`s bestseller novel with the
same title. The novel tells us a love story of a Singaporean rich guy played by Henry Golding
and Chineses-Americal Cinderella by Constance Wu. Apart from the romantic line, the
movie is full of humorous and miserable scenes. The couple in love`s main barrier is Nick`s
mother. She is against of marriage of her favorite heir and as Rachel`s friend has joked about
her ethnicity “ banana girl”—yellow on the outside, white on the inside. (Castillo 18)
Moreover, the characters represents other social problems like discrimination, social
inequality, and disrespectful behavior. A combination of cast, plot, soundtracks, luxury
mansions made this movie loved by the audience. The film critic Peter Bradshaw has
commented,
“good-natured and spectacular comedy…” ("Crazy Rich Asians (2018)")
I am against the idea of Kevin Maher for “The Times” newspaper. He wrote,
“The director, Jon M Chu, thankfully, knows his rom-coms. There's Pretty Woman in
here. There's Bridget Jones and Ever After, but he's made them new.”
In my opinion, the plot itself is not something new, but I understand that the film is based on
a novel. I haven’t read the book so I will discourse about what I have seen in the creation.
Firstly, I truly liked the sets and clothes. I am sure that luxury mansions, cars, and
hout couture clothes left no one indifferent. An abrupt transition from traditional grandma`s
house to modern hen party played a huge roll in my perception, as this fragment showed how
traditions and contemporary lifestyle could be combined. I have noticed the same technique
for food, music, and family events. It can be concluded that the director and producers afford
for indication cultural features were not in vain.
Unfortunately, I wast sympathized with the characters. I assume that’s because my
attention was dragged by everything to accept characters. I don’t blame the cast, they did an
amazing job, but I felt like I wasn’t with them. My feelings after I watched the film were as I
saw that couple for the first time. It seemed to me as I was there but not with Nick and
Rachel. Another thing that repelled me from the main characters is not knowing them. I had
to small background knowledge about them. As an example how did Rachel met Nick? Or
How could it happened that she didn’t know about Nick?
As I wrote before, a variety of music gave special sense. Lovely chines songs brought
me more deeply into Chinese culture. However, nothing from English songs stay4ed in my

head. Even now I can’t remember any song from Crazy Rich Asians. For me, thas is a big
disadvantage. Because soundtracks bring up all the memories about film when you hear it.
To conclude, I want to say that Crazy Rich Asians is definitely no bad movie, but my
expectancies were higher. I don’t think that I would rewatch it again. However, everyone
who has worked on this movie deserves good words.
